“In the city of Kusāvatī, “Kusāvatimhi nagare, when I was Lord of the Earth, yadā āsiṁ mahīpati; my name was Sudassana the Great, Mahāsudassano nāma, a wheel-turning monarch of great power. cakkavattī mahabbalo.

There, thrice a day, Tatthāhaṁ divase tikkhattuṁ, I declared in one place or another: ghosāpemi tahiṁ tahiṁ; ‘Who needs what? Who wants what? ‘Ko kiṁ icchati pattheti, To whom ought riches be given? kassa kiṁ dīyatū dhanaṁ.

Who needs an umbrella? Who is thirsty? Ko chātako ko tasito, Who a garland? Who some makeup? ko mālaṁ ko vilepanaṁ; What person, being naked, Nānārattāni vatthāni, and will put on colorful clothes? ko naggo paridahissati.

Who will take an umbrella on a highway, Ko pathe chattamādeti, who needs sandals, soft and pretty?’ kopāhanā mudū subhā’; Thus I had it proclaimed everywhere Iti sāyañca pāto ca, morning and night. ghosāpemi tahiṁ tahiṁ.

It was not just in ten places, Na taṁ dasasu ṭhānesu, or even a hundred, napi ṭhānasatesu vā; but in many hundreds of places Anekasataṭhānesu, riches were prepared for supplicants. paṭiyattaṁ yācake dhanaṁ.

By day or by night Divā vā yadi vā rattiṁ, if a supplicant comes, yadi eti vanibbako; then having gotten all he wants, Laddhā yadicchakaṁ bhogaṁ, he leaves with full hands. pūrahatthova gacchati.

I gave great gifts like this Evarūpaṁ mahādānaṁ, for my whole life. Adāsiṁ yāvajīvikaṁ; I did not give because I disliked riches, Napāhaṁ dessaṁ dhanaṁ dammi, or because I had a store set aside. Napi natthi nicayo mayi.

Suppose a person is sick. Yathāpi āturo nāma, In order to be free of sickness rogato parimuttiyā; having compensated the doctor with money, Dhanena vejjaṁ tappetvā, they become freed from sickness. rogato parimuccati.

Thus I, knowingly, Tathevāhaṁ jānamāno, in order to fulfill without remainder, paripūretumasesato; to fulfill what is lacking, Ūnamanaṁ pūrayituṁ, gave gifts to supplicants demi dānaṁ vanibbake; without clinging or reward, Nirālayo apaccāso, for the attainment of awakening.” sambodhimanupattiyā”ti.

Mahāsudassanacariyaṁ catutthaṁ.
