Complete Understanding of Conceit Mānapariññāsutta

This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard. Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ:

“Mendicants, without directly knowing and completely understanding conceit, without dispassion for it and giving it up, you can’t end suffering. “Mānaṁ, bhikkhave, anabhijānaṁ aparijānaṁ tattha cittaṁ avirājayaṁ appajahaṁ abhabbo dukkhakkhayāya. By directly knowing and completely understanding conceit, having dispassion for it and giving it up, you can end suffering.” Mānañca kho, bhikkhave, abhijānaṁ parijānaṁ tattha cittaṁ virājayaṁ pajahaṁ bhabbo dukkhakkhayāyā”ti.

The Buddha spoke this matter. Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca. On this it is said: Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati:

“These folk are caught up in conceit, “Mānupetā ayaṁ pajā, tied by conceit, delighting in existence. mānaganthā bhave ratā; Not completely understanding conceit, Mānaṁ aparijānantā, they return in future lives. āgantāro punabbhavaṁ.

Those who have given up conceit, Ye ca mānaṁ pahantvāna, freed with the ending of conceit, vimuttā mānasaṅkhaye; vanquishers of the tie of conceit, Te mānaganthābhibhuno, have risen above all suffering.” sabbadukkhamupaccagun”ti.

This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard. Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.

Aṭṭhamaṁ.
