Mittākāḷī Mittākāḷītherīgāthā

Having gone forth in faith “Saddhāya pabbajitvāna, from the lay life to homelessness, agārasmānagāriyaṁ; I wandered here and there, Vicariṁhaṁ tena tena, jealous of possessions and honors. lābhasakkāraussukā.

Neglecting the highest goal, Riñcitvā paramaṁ atthaṁ, I pursued the lowest. hīnamatthaṁ asevihaṁ; Under the sway of corruptions, Kilesānaṁ vasaṁ gantvā, I never knew the goal of the ascetic life. sāmaññatthaṁ na bujjhihaṁ.

I was struck with a sense of urgency Tassā me ahu saṁvego, as I was sitting in my hut: nisinnāya vihārake; “I’m walking the wrong path, Ummaggapaṭipannāmhi, under the sway of craving. taṇhāya vasamāgatā.

My life is short, Appakaṁ jīvitaṁ mayhaṁ, trampled by old age and sickness. jarā byādhi ca maddati; Before this body breaks apart, Purāyaṁ bhijjati kāyo, there is no time for me to be careless.” na me kālo pamajjituṁ.

I examined in line with the truth Yathābhūtamavekkhantī, the rise and fall of the aggregates. khandhānaṁ udayabbayaṁ; I stood up with mind liberated, Vimuttacittā uṭṭhāsiṁ, having fulfilled the Buddha’s instructions. kataṁ buddhassa sāsanan”ti.
