Sagacity Moneyyasutta

ā€œMendicants, there are these three kinds of sagacity. ā€œTīṇimāni, bhikkhave, moneyyāni. What three? Katamāni tīṇi? Sagacity of body, speech, and mind. Kāyamoneyyaṁ, vacÄ«moneyyaṁ, manomoneyyaṁ.

And what is sagacity of body? KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, kāyamoneyyaṁ? It’s when a mendicant doesn’t kill living creatures, steal, or have sex. Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu pāṇātipātā paį¹ivirato hoti, adinnādānā paį¹ivirato hoti, abrahmacariyā paį¹ivirato hoti. This is called ā€˜sagacity of body’. Idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, kāyamoneyyaṁ.

And what is sagacity of speech? KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, vacÄ«moneyyaṁ? It’s when a mendicant doesn’t use speech that’s false, divisive, harsh, or nonsensical. Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu musāvādā paį¹ivirato hoti, pisuṇāya vācāya paį¹ivirato hoti, pharusāya vācāya paį¹ivirato hoti, samphappalāpā paį¹ivirato hoti. This is called ā€˜sagacity of speech’. Idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, vacÄ«moneyyaṁ.

And what is sagacity of mind? KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, manomoneyyaṁ? It’s when a mendicant realizes the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life. And they live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements. Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu āsavānaṁ khayā anāsavaṁ cetovimuttiṁ paƱƱāvimuttiṁ diį¹į¹heva dhamme sayaṁ abhiƱƱā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharati. This is called ā€˜sagacity of mind’. Idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, manomoneyyaṁ. These are the three kinds of sagacity. Imāni kho, bhikkhave, tīṇi moneyyānÄ«ti.

A sage in body, a sage in speech, Kāyamuniṁ vacÄ«muniṁ, a sage undefiled in heart; cetomuniṁ anāsavaṁ; a sage, blessed with sagacity, Muniṁ moneyyasampannaṁ, has given up everything, they say.ā€ āhu sabbappahāyinanā€ti.
