Roots Mūlasutta

This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard. Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ:

“Mendicants, there are these three unskillful roots. “Tīṇimāni, bhikkhave, akusalamūlāni. What three? Katamāni tīṇi? Greed, hate, and delusion. Lobho akusalamūlaṁ, doso akusalamūlaṁ, moho akusalamūlaṁ—These are the three unskillful roots.” imāni kho, bhikkhave, tīṇi akusalamūlānī”ti.

The Buddha spoke this matter. Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca. On this it is said: Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati:

“When greed, hate, and delusion, “Lobho doso ca moho ca, have arisen inside oneself, purisaṁ pāpacetasaṁ; they harm a person of wicked heart, Hiṁsanti attasambhūtā, as a bamboo is destroyed by its own fruit.” tacasāraṁva samphalan”ti.

This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard. Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.

Paṭhamaṁ.
