Getting Old Najīratisutta
“What ages, what does not age? “Kiṁ jīrati kiṁ na jīrati, What’s called a deviation? kiṁsu uppathoti vuccati; What’s a roadblock for skillful qualities? Kiṁsu dhammānaṁ paripantho, What is ending day and night? kiṁsu rattindivakkhayo; What’s the stain of celibacy? Kiṁ malaṁ brahmacariyassa, What’s the waterless bath? kiṁ sinānamanodakaṁ.
How many holes are there in the world, Kati lokasmiṁ chiddāni, where one’s wealth leaks out? yattha vittaṁ na tiṭṭhati; We’ve come to ask you, worthy sir: Bhagavantaṁ puṭṭhumāgamma, how are we to understand this?” kathaṁ jānemu taṁ mayan”ti.
“The physical form of mortals gets old, “Rūpaṁ jīrati maccānaṁ, but their name and clan don’t. nāmagottaṁ na jīrati; Lust is called a deviation, Rāgo uppathoti vuccati.
and greed is a roadblock for skillful qualities. Lobho dhammānaṁ paripantho, Youth is ending day and night. Vayo rattindivakkhayo; Women are the stain of chastity, Itthī malaṁ brahmacariyassa, to which this generation clings. Etthāyaṁ sajjate pajā; Fervor and chastity Tapo ca brahmacariyañca, are the waterless bath. Taṁ sinānamanodakaṁ.
There are six holes in the world, Cha lokasmiṁ chiddāni, where one’s wealth leaks out: yattha vittaṁ na tiṭṭhati; laziness and negligence, Ālasyañca pamādo ca, lack of initiative and lack of restraint, anuṭṭhānaṁ asaṁyamo; sleepiness and sloth. Niddā tandī ca te chidde, You should completely get rid of these holes!” sabbaso taṁ vivajjaye”ti.
