The Questions of Nanda Nandamāṇavapucchā

“People say there are sages in the world,” “Santi loke munayo, said Venerable Nanda, (iccāyasmā nando) “but how is this the case? Janā vadanti tayidaṁ kathaṁsu; Is someone called a sage because of their knowledge, Ñāṇūpapannaṁ no muniṁ vadanti, or because of their way of life?” Udāhu ve jīvitenūpapannaṁ”.

“Experts do not speak of a sage in terms of “Na diṭṭhiyā na sutiyā na ñāṇena, (…) view, learning, or knowledge. Munīdha nanda kusalā vadanti; Those who are sages live far from the crowd, I say, Visenikatvā anīghā nirāsā, untroubled, with no need for hope.” Caranti ye te munayoti brūmi”.

“As to those ascetics and brahmins,” “Ye kecime samaṇabrāhmaṇāse, said Venerable Nanda, (iccāyasmā nando) “who speak of purity in terms of what is seen or heard, Diṭṭhassutenāpi vadanti suddhiṁ; or in terms of precepts and vows, Sīlabbatenāpi vadanti suddhiṁ, or in terms of countless different things. Anekarūpena vadanti suddhiṁ. Living self-controlled in that matter, Kaccissu te bhagavā tattha yatā carantā, have they crossed over rebirth and old age, good fellow? Atāru jātiñca jarañca mārisa; I ask you, Blessed One; please tell me this.” Pucchāmi taṁ bhagavā brūhi me taṁ”.

“As to those ascetics and brahmins,” “Ye kecime samaṇabrāhmaṇāse, replied the Buddha, (nandāti bhagavā) “who speak of purity in terms of what is seen or heard, Diṭṭhassutenāpi vadanti suddhiṁ; or in terms of precepts and vows, Sīlabbatenāpi vadanti suddhiṁ, or in terms of countless different things. Anekarūpena vadanti suddhiṁ; Even though they live self-controlled in that matter, Kiñcāpi te tattha yatā caranti, they’ve not crossed over rebirth and old age, <j>I declare.” Nātariṁsu jātijaranti brūmi”.

“As to those ascetics and brahmins,” “Ye kecime samaṇabrāhmaṇāse, said Venerable Nanda, (iccāyasmā nando) “who speak of purity in terms of what is seen or heard, Diṭṭhassutenāpi vadanti suddhiṁ; or in terms of precepts and vows, Sīlabbatenāpi vadanti suddhiṁ, or in terms of countless different things. Anekarūpena vadanti suddhiṁ. You say they have not crossed the flood, sage. Te ce muni brūsi anoghatiṇṇe, So who then in the world of gods and humans Atha ko carahi devamanussaloke; has crossed over rebirth and old age, good fellow? Atāri jātiñca jarañca mārisa, I ask you, Blessed One; please tell me this.” Pucchāmi taṁ bhagavā brūhi me taṁ”.

“I don’t say that all ascetics and brahmins,” “Nāhaṁ sabbe samaṇabrāhmaṇāse, replied the Buddha, (nandāti bhagavā) “are shrouded by rebirth and old age. Jātijarāya nivutāti brūmi; There are those here who have given up all Ye sīdha diṭṭhaṁ va sutaṁ mutaṁ vā, that is seen, heard, and thought, <j>and precepts and vows, Sīlabbataṁ vāpi pahāya sabbaṁ. who have given up all the countless different things. Anekarūpampi pahāya sabbaṁ, Fully understanding craving, free of defilements, Taṇhaṁ pariññāya anāsavāse; those people, I say, have crossed the flood.” Te ve narā oghatiṇṇāti brūmi”.

“I rejoice in the words of the great seer! “Etābhinandāmi vaco mahesino, You have expounded non-attachment well, Gotama. Sukittitaṁ gotamanūpadhīkaṁ; There are those here who have given up all Ye sīdha diṭṭhaṁ va sutaṁ mutaṁ vā, that is seen, heard, and thought, <j>and precepts and vows, Sīlabbataṁ vāpi pahāya sabbaṁ. who have given up all the countless different things. Anekarūpampi pahāya sabbaṁ, Fully understanding craving, free of defilements, Taṇhaṁ pariññāya anāsavāse; those people, I agree, have crossed the flood.” Ahampi te oghatiṇṇāti brūmī”ti.
