Nanduttarā Nanduttarātherīgāthā

In the past I worshiped the sacred flame, “Aggiṁ candañca sūriyañca, the moon, the sun, and the gods. devatā ca namassihaṁ; Having gone to a river ford, Nadītitthāni gantvāna, I plunged into the water. udakaṁ oruhāmihaṁ.

Undertaking many vows, Bahūvatasamādānā, I shaved half my head. aḍḍhaṁ sīsassa olikhiṁ; Preparing a bed on the ground, Chamāya seyyaṁ kappemi, I ate no food at night. rattiṁ bhattaṁ na bhuñjahaṁ.

I loved my ornaments and decorations; Vibhūsāmaṇḍanaratā, and with baths and oil-massages, nhāpanucchādanehi ca; I pandered to this body, Upakāsiṁ imaṁ kāyaṁ, racked by desire for pleasures of the senses. kāmarāgena aṭṭitā.

But then I gained faith, Tato saddhaṁ labhitvāna, and went forth to homelessness. pabbajiṁ anagāriyaṁ; Truly seeing the body, Disvā kāyaṁ yathābhūtaṁ, desire for sensual pleasure is eradicated. kāmarāgo samūhato.

All rebirths are cut off, Sabbe bhavā samucchinnā, wishes and aspirations too. icchā ca patthanāpi ca; Unyoked from all yokes, Sabbayogavisaṁyuttā, I’ve found peace of mind. santiṁ pāpuṇi cetaso”ti.
