Helping Penetration Nibbedhabhāgiyasutta

ā€œMendicants, I will teach you a path that helps penetration. ā€œNibbedhabhāgiyaṁ vo, bhikkhave, maggaṁ desessāmi; Listen … taṁ suṇātha.

And what is the path that helps penetration? Katamo ca, bhikkhave, nibbedhabhāgiyo maggo? Yadidaṁ—It is the seven awakening factors. satta bojjhaį¹…gā. What seven? Katame satta? The awakening factors of mindfulness, investigation of principles, energy, rapture, tranquility, immersion, and equanimity.ā€ Satisambojjhaį¹…go …pe… upekkhāsambojjhaį¹…goā€ti. When he said this, UdāyÄ« said to him: Evaṁ vutte, āyasmā udāyÄ« bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:

ā€œSir, how are the seven awakening factors developed and cultivated so as to lead to penetration?ā€ ā€œkathaṁ bhāvitā nu kho, bhante, satta bojjhaį¹…gā kathaṁ bahulÄ«katā nibbedhāya saṁvattantÄ«ā€ti?

ā€œUdāyÄ«, it’s when a mendicant develops the awakening factor of mindfulness, which relies on seclusion, fading away, and cessation, and ripens as letting go. And it is abundant, expansive, limitless, and free of ill will. ā€œIdha, udāyi, bhikkhu satisambojjhaį¹…gaṁ bhāveti vivekanissitaṁ virāganissitaṁ nirodhanissitaṁ vossaggapariṇāmiṁ vipulaṁ mahaggataṁ appamāṇaṁ abyāpajjaṁ. With a mind that has developed the awakening factor of mindfulness, they penetrate and shatter the mass of greed, So satisambojjhaį¹…gaṁ bhāvitena cittena anibbiddhapubbaṁ appadālitapubbaṁ lobhakkhandhaṁ nibbijjhati padāleti; the mass of hate, anibbiddhapubbaṁ appadālitapubbaṁ dosakkhandhaṁ nibbijjhati padāleti; and the mass of delusion for the first time. … anibbiddhapubbaṁ appadālitapubbaṁ mohakkhandhaṁ nibbijjhati padāleti …pe…

A mendicant develops the awakening factor of equanimity, which relies on seclusion, fading away, and cessation, and ripens as letting go. And it is abundant, expansive, limitless, and free of ill will. upekkhāsambojjhaį¹…gaṁ bhāveti vivekanissitaṁ virāganissitaṁ nirodhanissitaṁ vossaggapariṇāmiṁ vipulaṁ mahaggataṁ appamāṇaṁ abyāpajjaṁ. This is how are the seven awakening factors are developed and cultivated so as to lead to penetration.ā€ Evaṁ bhāvitā kho, udāyi, satta bojjhaį¹…gā evaṁ bahulÄ«katā nibbedhāya saṁvattantÄ«ā€ti.
