Support Nivesakasutta

Then Venerable Ānanda went up to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side. The Buddha said to him: Atha kho āyasmā ānando yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaṁ nisinnaṁ kho āyasmantaṁ ānandaṁ bhagavā etadavoca:

ā€œÄ€nanda, those who you have sympathy for, and those worth listening to—friends and colleagues, relatives and family—should be encouraged, supported, and established in three things. ā€œYe, ānanda, anukampeyyātha ye ca sotabbaṁ maƱƱeyyuṁ mittā vā amaccā vā ƱātÄ« vā sālohitā vā te vo, ānanda, tÄ«su į¹­hānesu samādapetabbā nivesetabbā patiį¹­į¹­hāpetabbā. What three? Katamesu tÄ«su?

Experiential confidence in the Buddha: Buddhe aveccappasāde samādapetabbā nivesetabbā patiį¹­į¹­hāpetabbā: ā€˜That Blessed One is perfected, a fully awakened Buddha, accomplished in knowledge and conduct, holy, knower of the world, supreme guide for those fit for training, teacher of gods and humans, awakened, blessed.’ ā€˜itipi so bhagavā arahaṁ sammāsambuddho vijjācaraṇasampanno sugato lokavidÅ« anuttaro purisadammasārathi satthā devamanussānaṁ, buddho bhagavā’ti,

Experiential confidence in the teaching: dhamme aveccappasāde samādapetabbā nivesetabbā patiį¹­į¹­hāpetabbā: ā€˜The teaching is well explained by the Buddha—apparent in the present life, immediately effective, inviting inspection, relevant, so that sensible people can know it for themselves.’ ā€˜svākkhāto bhagavatā dhammo sandiį¹­į¹­hiko akāliko ehipassiko opaneyyiko paccattaṁ veditabbo viññūhī’ti,

Experiential confidence in the Saį¹…gha: saį¹…ghe aveccappasāde samādapetabbā nivesetabbā patiį¹­į¹­hāpetabbā: ā€˜The Saį¹…gha of the Buddha’s disciples is practicing the way that’s good, direct, systematic, and proper. It consists of the four pairs, the eight individual persons. This is the Saį¹…gha of the Buddha’s disciples that is worthy of offerings dedicated to the gods, worthy of hospitality, worthy of a religious donation, worthy of greeting with joined palms, and is the supreme field of merit for the world.’ ā€˜suppaį¹­ipanno bhagavato sāvakasaį¹…gho ujuppaį¹­ipanno bhagavato sāvakasaį¹…gho Ʊāyappaį¹­ipanno bhagavato sāvakasaį¹…gho sāmÄ«cippaį¹­ipanno bhagavato sāvakasaį¹…gho, yadidaṁ cattāri purisayugāni aį¹­į¹­ha purisapuggalā esa bhagavato sāvakasaį¹…gho āhuneyyo pāhuneyyo dakkhiṇeyyo aƱjalikaraṇīyo anuttaraṁ puƱƱakkhettaṁ lokassā’ti.

There might be change in the four principal states—Siyā, ānanda, catunnaṁ mahābhÅ«tānaṁ aƱƱathattaṁ—earth, water, air, and fire—but a noble disciple with experiential confidence in the Buddha would never change. pathavÄ«dhātuyā āpodhātuyā tejodhātuyā vāyodhātuyā, na tveva buddhe aveccappasādena samannāgatassa ariyasāvakassa siyā aƱƱathattaṁ tatridaṁ aƱƱathattaṁ. In this context, ā€˜change’ means that such a noble disciple will be reborn in hell, the animal realm, or the ghost realm: this is quite impossible. So vatānanda, buddhe aveccappasādena samannāgato ariyasāvako nirayaṁ vā tiracchānayoniṁ vā pettivisayaṁ vā upapajjissatÄ«ti netaṁ į¹­hānaṁ vijjati.
