In the Borderlands Paccantasutta
Then the Buddha, picking up a little bit of dirt on his fingernail, addressed the mendicants: Atha kho bhagavÄ parittaį¹ nakhasikhÄyaį¹ paį¹suį¹ ÄropetvÄ bhikkhÅ« Ämantesi: āWhat do you think, mendicants? āTaį¹ kiį¹ maƱƱatha, bhikkhave, Which is more: the little bit of dirt on my fingernail, or this great earth?ā katamaį¹ nu kho bahutaraį¹āyo vÄyaį¹ mayÄ paritto nakhasikhÄyaį¹ paį¹su Äropito, ayaį¹ vÄ mahÄpathavÄ«āti?
āSir, the great earth is certainly more. The little bit of dirt on your fingernail is tiny. āEtadeva, bhante, bahutaraį¹, yadidaį¹āmahÄpathavÄ«; appamattakÄyaį¹ bhagavatÄ paritto nakhasikhÄyaį¹ paį¹su Äropito. Compared to the great earth, it doesnāt count, thereās no comparison, itās not worth a fraction.ā Saį¹ khampi na upeti, upanidhampi na upeti, kalabhÄgampi na upeti mahÄpathaviį¹ upanidhÄya bhagavatÄ paritto nakhasikhÄyaį¹ paį¹su Äropitoāti.
āIn the same way, the sentient beings reborn in central countries are few, while those reborn in the borderlands, among uneducated foreigners, are many. ā¦ā āEvameva kho, bhikkhave, appamattakÄ te sattÄ ye majjhimesu janapadesu paccÄjÄyanti; atha kho eteva bahutarÄ sattÄ ye paccantimesu janapadesu paccÄjÄyanti aviƱƱÄtÄresu milakkhesu ā¦peā¦.
