A Corrupted Mind Paduṭṭhacittasutta

This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard. Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ:

“Mendicants, when I’ve comprehended the mind of an individual whose mind is corrupted, I understand: “Idhāhaṁ, bhikkhave, ekaccaṁ puggalaṁ paduṭṭhacittaṁ evaṁ cetasā ceto paricca pajānāmi: ‘If this individual were to die right now, they would be cast down to hell.’ ‘imamhi cāyaṁ samaye puggalo kālaṁ kareyya yathābhataṁ nikkhitto evaṁ niraye’. Why is that? Taṁ kissa hetu? Because their mind is corrupted. Cittaṁ hissa, bhikkhave, paduṭṭhaṁ. Corruption of mind is the reason why some sentient beings, when their body breaks up, after death, are reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell.” Cetopadosahetu kho pana, bhikkhave, evam’idhekacce sattā kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā apāyaṁ duggatiṁ vinipātaṁ nirayaṁ upapajjantī”ti.

The Buddha spoke this matter. Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca. On this it is said: Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati:

“Knowing an individual’s “Paduṭṭhacittaṁ ñatvāna, corrupted mind, ekaccaṁ idha puggalaṁ; the Buddha explained this matter Etamatthañca byākāsi, in the mendicants’ presence. buddho bhikkhūna santike.

If that individual Imamhi cāyaṁ samaye, were to die at this time, kālaṁ kayirātha puggalo; they’d be reborn in hell, Nirayaṁ upapajjeyya, for their mind is corrupted. cittaṁ hissa padūsitaṁ.

That sort is cast down as surely Yathā haritvā nikkhipeyya, as if they’d been carried off and put there. evamevaṁ tathāvidho; For corruption of mind is the reason Cetopadosahetu hi, sentient beings go to a bad place.” sattā gacchanti duggatin”ti.

This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard. Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.
