This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard. Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ:

“Those sentient beings are truly bereft, mendicants, who are bereft of noble wisdom. “Te, bhikkhave, sattā suparihīnā ye ariyāya paññāya parihīnā. They live unhappily in this very life—with distress, anguish, and fever—Te diṭṭheva dhamme dukkhaṁ viharanti savighātaṁ saupāyāsaṁ sapariḷāhaṁ; and when the body breaks up, after death, they can expect a bad rebirth. kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā duggati pāṭikaṅkhā. Those sentient beings are not bereft who are not bereft of noble wisdom. Te, bhikkhave, sattā aparihīnā ye ariyāya paññāya aparihīnā. In this very life they’re happy—free of distress, anguish, and fever—Te diṭṭheva dhamme sukhaṁ viharanti avighātaṁ anupāyāsaṁ apariḷāhaṁ; and when the body breaks up, after death, they can expect a good rebirth.” kāyassa bhedā paraṁ maraṇā sugati pāṭikaṅkhā”ti.

The Buddha spoke this matter. Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca. On this it is said: Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati:

“See the world with its gods, “Paññāya parihānena, bereft of wisdom, passa lokaṁ sadevakaṁ; habituated to name and form, Niviṭṭhaṁ nāmarūpasmiṁ, imagining this is truth. idaṁ saccanti maññati.

Wisdom is best in the world, Paññā hi seṭṭhā lokasmiṁ, as it leads to penetration, yāyaṁ nibbedhagāminī; through which one rightly understands Yāya sammā pajānāti, the ending of rebirth and continued existence. jātibhavaparikkhayaṁ.

Gods and humans envy them, Tesaṁ devā manussā ca, the Buddhas, ever mindful, sambuddhānaṁ satīmataṁ; of laughing wisdom, Pihayanti hāsapaññānaṁ, bearing their final body.” sarīrantimadhārinan”ti.

This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard. Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.
