Eight on the Ultimate Paramaṭṭhakasutta
If, maintaining that theirs is the “ultimate” view, Paramanti diṭṭhīsu paribbasāno, a personage makes it out to be highest in the world; Yaduttari kurute jantu loke; then they declare all others are “lesser”; Hīnāti aññe tato sabbamāha, that’s why they’re not over disputes. Tasmā vivādāni avītivatto.
If they see an advantage for themselves Yadattanī passati ānisaṁsaṁ, in what’s seen, heard, or thought; <j>or in precepts or vows, Diṭṭhe sute sīlavate mute vā; in that case, having adopted that one alone, Tadeva so tattha samuggahāya, they see all others as inferior. Nihīnato passati sabbamaññaṁ.
Those who are skilled say that, too, is a knot, Taṁ vāpi ganthaṁ kusalā vadanti, relying on which people see others as lesser. Yaṁ nissito passati hīnamaññaṁ; That’s why a mendicant ought not rely Tasmā hi diṭṭhaṁ va sutaṁ mutaṁ vā, on what’s seen, heard, or thought, <j>or on precepts and vows. Sīlabbataṁ bhikkhu na nissayeyya.
Nor would they form a view about the world Diṭṭhimpi lokasmiṁ na kappayeyya, through a notion or through precepts and vows. Ñāṇena vā sīlavatena vāpi; They would never represent themselves as “equal”, Samoti attānamanūpaneyya, nor conceive themselves “worse” or “better”. Hīno na maññetha visesi vāpi.
What was picked up has been set down <j>and is not grasped again; Attaṁ pahāya anupādiyāno, they form no dependency even on notions. Ñāṇepi so nissayaṁ no karoti; They follow no side among the factions, Sa ve viyattesu na vaggasārī, and believe in no view at all. Diṭṭhimpi so na pacceti kiñci.
One here who has no wish for either end—Yassūbhayante paṇidhīdha natthi, for any state of existence in this life or the next—Bhavābhavāya idha vā huraṁ vā; has adopted no dogma at all Nivesanā tassa na santi keci, after judging among the teachings. Dhammesu niccheyya samuggahītaṁ.
For them not even the tiniest idea is formulated here Tassīdha diṭṭhe va sute mute vā, regarding what is seen, heard, or thought. Pakappitā natthi aṇūpi saññā; That brahmin does not grasp any view—Taṁ brāhmaṇaṁ diṭṭhimanādiyānaṁ, how could anyone in this world judge them? Kenīdha lokasmiṁ vikappayeyya.
They don’t make things up or promote them, Na kappayanti na purekkharonti, and don’t subscribe to any of the doctrines. Dhammāpi tesaṁ na paṭicchitāse; The brahmin has no need to be led by precept or vow; Na brāhmaṇo sīlavatena neyyo, gone to the far shore, one such does not return. Pāraṅgato na pacceti tādīti.
Paramaṭṭhakasuttaṁ pañcamaṁ.
