Decline Parihānasutta

This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard. Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ:

ā€œThese three things lead to the decline of a mendicant trainee. ā€œTayome, bhikkhave, dhammā sekhassa bhikkhuno parihānāya saṁvattanti. What three? Katame tayo? It’s when a mendicant relishes work, Idha, bhikkhave, sekho bhikkhu kammārāmo hoti, kammarato, kammārāmatamanuyutto; talk, bhassārāmo hoti, bhassarato, bhassārāmatamanuyutto; and sleep. niddārāmo hoti, niddārato, niddārāmatamanuyutto. These three things lead to the decline of a mendicant trainee. Ime kho, bhikkhave, tayo dhammā sekhassa bhikkhuno parihānāya saṁvattanti.

These three things don’t lead to the decline of a mendicant trainee. Tayome, bhikkhave, dhammā sekhassa bhikkhuno aparihānāya saṁvattanti. What three? Katame tayo? It’s when a mendicant doesn’t relish work, Idha, bhikkhave, sekho bhikkhu na kammārāmo hoti, na kammarato, na kammārāmatamanuyutto; talk, na bhassārāmo hoti, na bhassarato, na bhassārāmatamanuyutto; and sleep. na niddārāmo hoti, na niddārato, na niddārāmatamanuyutto. These three things don’t lead to the decline of a mendicant trainee.ā€ Ime kho, bhikkhave, tayo dhammā sekhassa bhikkhuno aparihānāya saṁvattantÄ«ā€ti.

The Buddha spoke this matter. Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca. On this it is said: Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati:

ā€œRestless, they relish ā€œKammārāmo bhassārāmo, work, talk, and sleep. Niddārāmo ca uddhato; Such a mendicant is incapable Abhabbo tādiso bhikkhu, of experiencing the highest awakening. Phuį¹į¹huṁ sambodhimuttamaṁ.

That’s why one ought have few duties, Tasmā hi appakiccassa, being wakeful not restless. Appamiddho anuddhato; Such a mendicant is capable Bhabbo so tādiso bhikkhu, of experiencing the highest awakening.ā€ Phuį¹į¹huṁ sambodhimuttamanā€ti.

This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard. Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.

Dasamaṁ.
