Defilements (1st) Paṭhamaāsavasutta

This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard. Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ:

“Mendicants, there are these three defilements. “Tayome, bhikkhave, āsavā. What three? Katame tayo? The defilements of sensuality, desire to be reborn, and ignorance. Kāmāsavo, bhavāsavo, avijjāsavo—These are the three defilements.” ime kho, bhikkhave, tayo āsavā”ti.

The Buddha spoke this matter. Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca. On this it is said: Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati:

“Stilled, aware, “Samāhito sampajāno, a mindful disciple of the Buddha sato buddhassa sāvako; understands defilements, Āsave ca pajānāti, the cause of defilements, āsavānañca sambhavaṁ.

where they cease, Yattha cetā nirujjhanti, and the path that leads to their ending. maggañca khayagāminaṁ; With the ending of defilements, a mendicant Āsavānaṁ khayā bhikkhu, is hungerless, quenched.” nicchāto parinibbuto”ti.

This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard. Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.

Sattamaṁ.
