Searches (1st) Paṭhamaesanāsutta

This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard. Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ:

“Mendicants, there are these three searches. “Tisso imā, bhikkhave, esanā. What three? Katamā tisso? The search for sensual pleasures, the search for continued existence, and the search for a spiritual path. Kāmesanā, bhavesanā, brahmacariyesanā—These are the three searches. imā kho, bhikkhave, tisso esanā”ti.

The Buddha spoke this matter. Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca. On this it is said: Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati:

“Stilled, aware, “Samāhito sampajāno, a mindful disciple of the Buddha sato buddhassa sāvako; understands searches, Esanā ca pajānāti, the cause of searches, esanānañca sambhavaṁ.

where they cease, Yattha cetā nirujjhanti, and the path that leads to their ending. maggañca khayagāminaṁ; With the ending of searches, a mendicant Esanānaṁ khayā bhikkhu, is hungerless, quenched.” nicchāto parinibbuto”ti.

This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard. Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.

Pañcamaṁ.
