A Friend (1st) Paį¹hamamittasutta
āMendicants, you should associate with a friend who has seven factors. āSattahi, bhikkhave, aį¹ gehi samannÄgato mitto sevitabbo. What seven? Katamehi sattahi? They give what is hard to give. They do what is hard to do. They endure what is hard to endure. They reveal their secrets to you. They keep your secrets. They donāt abandon you in times of trouble. They donāt look down on you in times of loss. Duddadaį¹ dadÄti, dukkaraį¹ karoti, dukkhamaį¹ khamati, guyhamassa Ävi karoti, guyhamassa pariguhati, ÄpadÄsu na jahati, khÄ«į¹ena nÄtimaƱƱati. You should associate with a friend who has these seven factors. Imehi kho, bhikkhave, sattahi aį¹ gehi samannÄgato mitto sevitabboti.
A friend gives what is hard to give, Duddadaį¹ dadÄti mitto, and does whatās hard to do. dukkaraƱcÄpi kubbati; They put up with your harsh words, Athopissa duruttÄni, and with things hard to endure. khamati dukkhamÄni ca.
They tell you their secrets, GuyhaƱca tassa akkhÄti, and keep your secrets for you. guyhassa parigÅ«hati; They donāt abandon you in times of trouble, ÄpadÄsu na jahÄti, or look down on you in times of loss. khÄ«į¹ena nÄtimaƱƱati.
The individual in whom Yamhi etÄni į¹hÄnÄni, these things are found is your friend. saį¹vijjantÄ«dha puggale; If you want to have a friend, So mitto mittakÄmena, you should keep company with that sort.ā bhajitabbo tathÄvidhoāti.
