A Friend (1st) Paį¹­hamamittasutta

ā€œMendicants, you should associate with a friend who has seven factors. ā€œSattahi, bhikkhave, aį¹…gehi samannāgato mitto sevitabbo. What seven? Katamehi sattahi? They give what is hard to give. They do what is hard to do. They endure what is hard to endure. They reveal their secrets to you. They keep your secrets. They don’t abandon you in times of trouble. They don’t look down on you in times of loss. Duddadaṁ dadāti, dukkaraṁ karoti, dukkhamaṁ khamati, guyhamassa āvi karoti, guyhamassa pariguhati, āpadāsu na jahati, khīṇena nātimaƱƱati. You should associate with a friend who has these seven factors. Imehi kho, bhikkhave, sattahi aį¹…gehi samannāgato mitto sevitabboti.

A friend gives what is hard to give, Duddadaṁ dadāti mitto, and does what’s hard to do. dukkaraƱcāpi kubbati; They put up with your harsh words, Athopissa duruttāni, and with things hard to endure. khamati dukkhamāni ca.

They tell you their secrets, GuyhaƱca tassa akkhāti, and keep your secrets for you. guyhassa parigÅ«hati; They don’t abandon you in times of trouble, Āpadāsu na jahāti, or look down on you in times of loss. khīṇena nātimaƱƱati.

The individual in whom Yamhi etāni į¹­hānāni, these things are found is your friend. saṁvijjantÄ«dha puggale; If you want to have a friend, So mitto mittakāmena, you should keep company with that sort.ā€ bhajitabbo tathāvidhoā€ti.
