Greed (1st) Paṭhamarāgasutta

This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard. Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ:

“Whoever has not given up greed, hate, and delusion “Yassa kassaci, bhikkhave, rāgo appahīno, doso appahīno, moho appahīno—is said to be trapped. They’re caught in Māra’s snare, and the Wicked One can do with them what he wants. ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, ‘baddho mārassa paṭimukkassa mārapāso yathākāmakaraṇīyo pāpimato’. Whoever has given up greed, hate, and delusion Yassa kassaci, bhikkhave, rāgo pahīno, doso pahīno, moho pahīno—is said to be free. They’re released from Māra’s snare, and the Wicked One cannot do with them what he wants.” ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, ‘abaddho mārassa omukkassa mārapāso na yathākāmakaraṇīyo pāpimato’”ti.

The Buddha spoke this matter. Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca. On this it is said: Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati:

“Those in whom greed, hate, and ignorance “Yassa rāgo ca doso ca, have faded away, avijjā ca virājitā; belong with those who are evolved; Taṁ bhāvitattaññataraṁ, A manifestation of divinity, realized, brahmabhūtaṁ tathāgataṁ; awakened, beyond enmity and fear, Buddhaṁ verabhayātītaṁ, they’ve given up everything, they say.” āhu sabbappahāyinan”ti.

This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard. Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.

Navamaṁ.
