Bhāradvāja the Alms-Gatherer Piṇḍolabhāradvājattheragāthā

You can’t live by fasting, “Nayidaṁ anayena jīvitaṁ, but food doesn’t lead to peace of heart. Nāhāro hadayassa santiko; Seeing how this bag of bones is sustained by food, Āhāraṭṭhitiko samussayo, I wander, seeking. Iti disvāna carāmi esanaṁ.

They know it’s just a swamp, Paṅkoti hi naṁ pavedayuṁ, this homage and veneration in respectable families. Yāyaṁ vandanapūjanā kulesu; Honor is a subtle dart, hard to extract, Sukhumaṁ sallaṁ durubbahaṁ, and hard for a reprobate to give up. Sakkāro kāpurisena dujjaho”ti.

That is how these verses were recited by the senior venerable Bhāradvāja the Alms-Gatherer. Itthaṁ sudaṁ āyasmā piṇḍolabhāradvājo thero gāthāyo abhāsitthāti.
