At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery. Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṁ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme.

Now at that time the Buddha was educating, encouraging, firing up, and inspiring the mendicants with a Dhamma talk about extinguishment. Tena kho pana samayena bhagavā bhikkhū nibbānapaṭisaṁyuttāya dhammiyā kathāya sandasseti samādapeti samuttejeti sampahaṁseti. And those mendicants were paying attention, applying the mind, concentrating wholeheartedly, and actively listening. Te ca bhikkhū aṭṭhiṁ katvā manasi katvā sabbacetasā samannāharitvā ohitasotā dhammaṁ suṇanti.

Then the native spirit Punabbasu’s Mother soothed her little children, saying: Atha kho punabbasumātā yakkhinī puttake evaṁ tosesi:

“Hush, little Uttarā! “Tuṇhī uttarike hohi, Hush, Punabbasu! tuṇhī hohi punabbasu; For I want to listen to the teaching Yāvāhaṁ buddhaseṭṭhassa, of the Teacher, the supreme Buddha. dhammaṁ sossāmi satthuno.

Extinguishment, the Blessed One said, Nibbānaṁ bhagavā āha, is the release from all ties. sabbaganthappamocanaṁ; I have a lasting love Ativelā ca me hoti, for this teaching. asmiṁ dhamme piyāyanā.

In this world, your own child is dear; Piyo loke sako putto, in this world, your own husband is dear; piyo loke sako pati; but even greater than that is my love Tato piyatarā mayhaṁ, for this teaching’s quest. assa dhammassa magganā.

For neither son nor husband, Na hi putto pati vāpi, dear as they are, can free you from suffering; piyo dukkhā pamocaye; as listening to the true teaching Yathā saddhammassavanaṁ, frees living creatures from suffering. dukkhā moceti pāṇinaṁ.

In this world mired in suffering, Loke dukkhaparetasmiṁ, fettered by old age and death, Jarāmaraṇasaṁyute; I want to listen to the teaching Jarāmaraṇamokkhāya, through which the Buddha awakened, Yaṁ dhammaṁ abhisambudhaṁ; which frees you from old age and death. Taṁ dhammaṁ sotumicchāmi, So hush, Punabbasu!” Tuṇhī hohi punabbasū”ti.

“Mom, I’m not speaking, “Ammā na byāharissāmi, and Uttarā is silent, too. tuṇhībhūtāyamuttarā; Focus just on the teaching, Dhammameva nisāmehi, for it’s nice to listen to the true teaching. saddhammassavanaṁ sukhaṁ; And it’s because we haven’t understood the teaching Saddhammassa anaññāya, that we live in suffering, Mom. ammā dukkhaṁ carāmase.

He is a beacon for those who are lost Esa devamanussānaṁ, among gods and humans. sammūḷhānaṁ pabhaṅkaro; The Buddha, bearing his final body, Buddho antimasārīro, the Clear-eyed One teaches Dhamma.” dhammaṁ deseti cakkhumā”ti.

“It’s good that my child’s so astute, “Sādhu kho paṇḍito nāma, this child I bore and suckled! putto jāto uresayo; My child loves the pure teaching Putto me buddhaseṭṭhassa, of the supreme Buddha. dhammaṁ suddhaṁ piyāyati.

Punabbasu, may you be happy! Punabbasu sukhī hohi, Today, I rise. ajjāhamhi samuggatā; Hear me too, Uttarā: Diṭṭhāni ariyasaccāni, I have seen the noble truths!” uttarāpi suṇātu me”ti.
