A Person Purisasutta

At Sāvatthī. Sāvatthinidānaṁ.

Then King Pasenadi of Kosala went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to the Buddha, Atha kho rājā pasenadi kosalo yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho rājā pasenadi kosalo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: ā€œSir, how many things arise inside a person for their harm, suffering, and discomfort?ā€ ā€œkati nu kho, bhante, purisassa dhammā ajjhattaṁ uppajjamānā uppajjanti ahitāya dukkhāya aphāsuvihārāyÄā€ti?

ā€œGreat king, three things arise inside a person for their harm, suffering, and discomfort. ā€œTayo kho, mahārāja, purisassa dhammā ajjhattaṁ uppajjamānā uppajjanti ahitāya dukkhāya aphāsuvihārāya. What three? Katame tayo? Greed, Lobho kho, mahārāja, purisassa dhammo ajjhattaṁ uppajjamāno uppajjati ahitāya dukkhāya aphāsuvihārāya. hate, Doso kho, mahārāja, purisassa dhammo ajjhattaṁ uppajjamāno uppajjati ahitāya dukkhāya aphāsuvihārāya. and delusion. Moho kho, mahārāja, purisassa dhammo ajjhattaṁ uppajjamāno uppajjati ahitāya dukkhāya aphāsuvihārāya. These three things arise inside a person for their harm, suffering, and discomfort.ā€ Ime kho, mahārāja, tayo purisassa dhammā ajjhattaṁ uppajjamānā uppajjanti ahitāya dukkhāya aphāsuvihārāyÄā€ti.

ā€œWhen greed, hate, and delusion, ā€œLobho doso ca moho ca, have arisen inside oneself, purisaṁ pāpacetasaṁ; they harm a person of wicked heart, Hiṁsanti attasambhÅ«tā, as a bamboo is destroyed by its own fruit.ā€ tacasāraṁva samphalanā€ti.
