With Rāhula Rāhulasutta

“Does familiarity breed contempt, “Kacci abhiṇhasaṁvāsā, even for the man of wisdom? nāvajānāsi paṇḍitaṁ; Do you honor he who holds aloft Ukkādhāro manussānaṁ, the torch for all humanity?” kacci apacito tayā”.

“Familiarity breeds no contempt “Nāhaṁ abhiṇhasaṁvāsā, for the man of wisdom. avajānāmi paṇḍitaṁ; I always honor he who holds aloft Ukkādhāro manussānaṁ, the torch for all humanity.” niccaṁ apacito mayā”.

“One who’s given up the five sensual stimulations, “Pañca kāmaguṇe hitvā, so pleasing and delightful, piyarūpe manorame; and who’s left the home life out of faith—Saddhāya gharā nikkhamma, let them make an end to suffering! dukkhassantakaro bhava.

Mix with spiritual friends, Mitte bhajassu kalyāṇe, stay in remote lodgings, pantañca sayanāsanaṁ; secluded and quiet, Vivittaṁ appanigghosaṁ, and eat in moderation. mattaññū hohi bhojane.

Robes, almsfood, Cīvare piṇḍapāte ca, requisites and lodgings: paccaye sayanāsane; don’t crave such things; Etesu taṇhaṁ mākāsi, don’t come back to this world again. mā lokaṁ punarāgami.

Be restrained in the monastic code, Saṁvuto pātimokkhasmiṁ, and the five sense faculties, indriyesu ca pañcasu; With mindfulness immersed in the body, Sati kāyagatā tyatthu, be full of disillusionment. nibbidābahulo bhava.

Turn away from the sign Nimittaṁ parivajjehi, that’s attractive, provoking lust. subhaṁ rāgūpasañhitaṁ; With mind unified and serene, Asubhāya cittaṁ bhāvehi, meditate on the ugly aspects of the body. ekaggaṁ susamāhitaṁ.

Meditate on the signless, Animittañca bhāvehi, give up the tendency to conceit; Mānānusayamujjaha; and when you comprehend conceit, Tato mānābhisamayā, you will live at peace.” Upasanto carissatī”ti.

That is how the Buddha regularly advised Venerable Rāhula with these verses. Itthaṁ sudaṁ bhagavā āyasmantaṁ rāhulaṁ imāhi gāthāhi abhiṇhaṁ ovadatīti.
