Gems Ratanasutta

Whatever beings have gathered here, Yānīdha bhūtāni samāgatāni, on the ground or in the sky: Bhummāni vā yāni va antalikkhe; may beings all be of happy heart, Sabbeva bhūtā sumanā bhavantu, and listen carefully to what is said. Athopi sakkacca suṇantu bhāsitaṁ.

So pay heed, all you beings, Tasmā hi bhūtā nisāmetha sabbe, have love for humankind, Mettaṁ karotha mānusiyā pajāya; who day and night bring offerings; Divā ca ratto ca haranti ye baliṁ, please protect them diligently. Tasmā hi ne rakkhatha appamattā.

There’s no wealth in this life or the next, Yaṁ kiñci vittaṁ idha vā huraṁ vā, no sublime gem in the heavens, Saggesu vā yaṁ ratanaṁ paṇītaṁ; that equals the Realized One. Na no samaṁ atthi tathāgatena, This sublime gem is in the Buddha: Idampi buddhe ratanaṁ paṇītaṁ; by this truth, may you be well! Etena saccena suvatthi hotu.

Ending, dispassion, the undying, the sublime, Khayaṁ virāgaṁ amataṁ paṇītaṁ, attained by the Sakyan Sage immersed in samādhi; Yadajjhagā sakyamunī samāhito; there is nothing equal to that Dhamma. Na tena dhammena samatthi kiñci, This sublime gem is in the Dhamma: Idampi dhamme ratanaṁ paṇītaṁ; by this truth, may you be well! Etena saccena suvatthi hotu.

The purity praised by the highest Buddha Yaṁ buddhaseṭṭho parivaṇṇayī suciṁ, is said to be the “immersion with immediate fruit”; Samādhimānantarikaññamāhu; no equal to that immersion is found. Samādhinā tena samo na vijjati, This sublime gem is in the Dhamma: Idampi dhamme ratanaṁ paṇītaṁ; by this truth, may you be well! Etena saccena suvatthi hotu.

The eight individual persons praised by the good Ye puggalā aṭṭha sataṁ pasatthā, are the four pairs of the Holy One’s disciples; Cattāri etāni yugāni honti; they are worthy of religious donations, Te dakkhiṇeyyā sugatassa sāvakā, what’s given to them is very fruitful. Etesu dinnāni mahapphalāni; This sublime gem is in the Saṅgha: Idampi saṅghe ratanaṁ paṇītaṁ, by this truth, may you be well! Etena saccena suvatthi hotu.

Dedicated to Gotama’s dispensation, Ye suppayuttā manasā daḷhena, strong-minded, free of sense desire, Nikkāmino gotamasāsanamhi; they’ve attained the goal, <j>plunged into freedom from death, Te pattipattā amataṁ vigayha, and enjoy the quenching they’ve freely gained. Laddhā mudhā nibbutiṁ bhuñjamānā; This sublime gem is in the Saṅgha: Idampi saṅghe ratanaṁ paṇītaṁ, by this truth, may you be well! Etena saccena suvatthi hotu.

As Indra’s pillar rooted in earth Yathindakhīlo pathavissito siyā, is not shaken by the four winds, Catubbhi vātehi asampakampiyo; I say a true person is like this, Tathūpamaṁ sappurisaṁ vadāmi, who sees the noble truths in experience. Yo ariyasaccāni avecca passati; This sublime gem is in the Saṅgha: Idampi saṅghe ratanaṁ paṇītaṁ, by this truth, may you be well! Etena saccena suvatthi hotu.

Those who fathom the noble truths Ye ariyasaccāni vibhāvayanti, taught by the one of deep wisdom, Gambhīrapaññena sudesitāni; do not take an eighth life, Kiñcāpi te honti bhusaṁ pamattā, even if they are hugely negligent. Na te bhavaṁ aṭṭhamamādiyanti; This sublime gem is in the Saṅgha: Idampi saṅghe ratanaṁ paṇītaṁ, by this truth, may you be well! Etena saccena suvatthi hotu.

When they attain to vision Sahāvassa dassanasampadāya, they give up three things: Tayassu dhammā jahitā bhavanti; substantialist view, doubt, and any Sakkāyadiṭṭhī vicikicchitañca, attachment to precepts and observances. Sīlabbataṁ vāpi yadatthi kiñci.

They’re freed from the four places of loss, Catūhapāyehi ca vippamutto, and cannot do six things. Chaccābhiṭhānāni abhabba kātuṁ; This sublime gem is in the Saṅgha: Idampi saṅghe ratanaṁ paṇītaṁ, by this truth, may you be well! Etena saccena suvatthi hotu.

Even if they do a bad deed Kiñcāpi so kamma karoti pāpakaṁ, by body, speech, or mind, Kāyena vācā uda cetasā vā; they are unable to conceal it; Abhabba so tassa paṭicchadāya, this inability applies to <j>one who has seen the truth, they say. Abhabbatā diṭṭhapadassa vuttā; This sublime gem is in the Saṅgha: Idampi saṅghe ratanaṁ paṇītaṁ, by this truth, may you be well! Etena saccena suvatthi hotu.

Like a tall forest tree crowned with flowers Vanappagumbe yatha phussitagge, in the first month of summer; Gimhānamāse paṭhamasmiṁ gimhe; that’s how he taught the superb Dhamma, Tathūpamaṁ dhammavaraṁ adesayi, leading to extinguishment, the ultimate benefit. Nibbānagāmiṁ paramaṁ hitāya; This sublime gem is in the Buddha: Idampi buddhe ratanaṁ paṇītaṁ, by this truth, may you be well! Etena saccena suvatthi hotu.

The superb, knower of the superb, <j>giver of the superb, bringer of the superb; Varo varaññū varado varāharo, taught the superb Dhamma supreme. Anuttaro dhammavaraṁ adesayi; This sublime gem is in the Buddha: Idampi buddhe ratanaṁ paṇītaṁ, by this truth, may you be well! Etena saccena suvatthi hotu.

The old is ended, nothing new is produced. Khīṇaṁ purāṇaṁ nava natthi sambhavaṁ, their minds have no desire for future rebirth. Virattacittāyatike bhavasmiṁ; Withered are the seeds, there’s no desire for growth, Te khīṇabījā avirūḷhichandā, those attentive ones are extinguished like this lamp. Nibbanti dhīrā yathāyaṁ padīpo; This sublime gem is in the Saṅgha: Idampi saṅghe ratanaṁ paṇītaṁ, by this truth, may you be well! Etena saccena suvatthi hotu.

Whatever beings have gathered here, Yānīdha bhūtāni samāgatāni, on the ground or in the sky: Bhummāni vā yāni va antalikkhe; the Realized One is honored by gods and humans! Tathāgataṁ devamanussapūjitaṁ, We bow to the Buddha! May you be safe! Buddhaṁ namassāma suvatthi hotu.
