Esteem SakkÄrasutta
This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard. VuttaƱhetaį¹ bhagavatÄ vuttamarahatÄti me sutaį¹:
āIāve seen, mendicants, sentient beings whose minds are overcome and overwhelmed by honor. When their body breaks up, after death, theyāre reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell. āDiį¹į¹hÄ mayÄ, bhikkhave, sattÄ sakkÄrena abhibhÅ«tÄ, pariyÄdinnacittÄ, kÄyassa bhedÄ paraį¹ maraį¹Ä apÄyaį¹ duggatiį¹ vinipÄtaį¹ nirayaį¹ upapannÄ.
Iāve seen sentient beings whose minds are overcome and overwhelmed by not being honored. When their body breaks up, after death, theyāre reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell. Diį¹į¹hÄ mayÄ, bhikkhave, sattÄ asakkÄrena abhibhÅ«tÄ, pariyÄdinnacittÄ, kÄyassa bhedÄ paraį¹ maraį¹Ä apÄyaį¹ duggatiį¹ vinipÄtaį¹ nirayaį¹ upapannÄ.
Iāve seen sentient beings whose minds are overcome and overwhelmed by both honor and by not being honored. When their body breaks up, after death, theyāre reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell. Diį¹į¹hÄ mayÄ, bhikkhave, sattÄ sakkÄrena ca asakkÄrena ca tadubhayena abhibhÅ«tÄ, pariyÄdinnacittÄ, kÄyassa bhedÄ paraį¹ maraį¹Ä apÄyaį¹ duggatiį¹ vinipÄtaį¹ nirayaį¹ upapannÄ.
Now, I donāt say this because Iāve heard it from some other ascetic or brahmin. Taį¹ kho panÄhaį¹, bhikkhave, nÄƱƱassa samaį¹assa vÄ brÄhmaį¹assa vÄ sutvÄ vadÄmi; I only say it because Iāve known, seen, and realized it for myself.ā (ā¦) api ca, bhikkhave, yadeva me sÄmaṠñÄtaį¹ sÄmaį¹ diį¹į¹haį¹ sÄmaį¹ viditaį¹ tamevÄhaį¹ vadÄmi.
Diį¹į¹hÄ mayÄ, bhikkhave, sattÄ sakkÄrena abhibhÅ«tÄ, pariyÄdinnacittÄ, kÄyassa bhedÄ paraį¹ maraį¹Ä apÄyaį¹ duggatiį¹ vinipÄtaį¹ nirayaį¹ upapannÄ.
Diį¹į¹hÄ mayÄ, bhikkhave, sattÄ asakkÄrena abhibhÅ«tÄ, pariyÄdinnacittÄ, kÄyassa bhedÄ paraį¹ maraį¹Ä apÄyaį¹ duggatiį¹ vinipÄtaį¹ nirayaį¹ upapannÄ.
Diį¹į¹hÄ mayÄ, bhikkhave, sattÄ sakkÄrena ca asakkÄrena ca tadubhayena abhibhÅ«tÄ, pariyÄdinnacittÄ, kÄyassa bhedÄ paraį¹ maraį¹Ä apÄyaį¹ duggatiį¹ vinipÄtaį¹ nirayaį¹ upapannÄāti.
The Buddha spoke this matter. Etamatthaį¹ bhagavÄ avoca. On this it is said: Tatthetaį¹ iti vuccati:
āWhether theyāre honored āYassa sakkariyamÄnassa, or not honored, or both, asakkÄrena cÅ«bhayaį¹; their immersion doesnāt waver SamÄdhi na vikampati, as they abide in the immeasurables. appamÄdavihÄrino.
They persistently practice absorption Taį¹ jhÄyinaį¹ sÄtatikaį¹, with subtle view and discernment. sukhumadiį¹į¹hivipassakaį¹; Rejoicing in the ending of grasping, UpÄdÄnakkhayÄrÄmaį¹, theyāre said to be a true person.ā Ähu sappuriso itÄ«āti.
This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard. Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatÄ, iti me sutanti.
