Schism in the Saį¹…gha Saį¹…ghabhedakasutta

At one time the Buddha was staying near KosambÄ«, in Ghosita’s Monastery. Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā kosambiyaṁ viharati ghositārāme. Then Venerable Ānanda went up to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side. The Buddha said to him, Atha kho āyasmā ānando yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaṁ nisinnaṁ kho āyasmantaṁ ānandaṁ bhagavā etadavoca: ā€œWell, Ānanda, has that disciplinary issue been settled yet?ā€ ā€œapi nu taṁ, ānanda, adhikaraṇaṁ vÅ«pasantanā€ti?

ā€œHow could it be, sir? ā€œKuto taṁ, bhante, adhikaraṇaṁ vÅ«pasamissati. Venerable Anuruddha’s protĆ©gĆ© Bāhiya remains entirely committed to creating a schism in the Saį¹…gha. Āyasmato, bhante, anuruddhassa bāhiyo nāma saddhivihāriko kevalakappaṁ saį¹…ghabhedāya į¹­hito. But Anuruddha doesn’t think to say a single word about it.ā€ Tatrāyasmā anuruddho na ekavācikampi bhaṇitabbaṁ maƱƱatÄ«ā€ti.

ā€œBut Ānanda, since when has Anuruddha been involved in disciplinary issues in the midst of the Saį¹…gha? ā€œKadā panānanda, anuruddho saį¹…ghamajjhe adhikaraṇesu voyuƱjati. Shouldn’t you, together with Sāriputta and Moggallāna, settle all disciplinary issues that come up? Nanu, ānanda, yāni kānici adhikaraṇāni uppajjanti, sabbāni tāni tumhe ceva vÅ«pasametha sāriputtamoggallānā ca.

A bad monk sees four reasons to relish schism in the Saį¹…gha. Cattārome, ānanda, atthavase sampassamāno pāpabhikkhu saį¹…ghabhedena nandati. What four? Katame cattāro? Take an unethical monk, of bad qualities, filthy, with suspicious behavior, underhand, no true ascetic or spiritual practitioner—though claiming to be one—rotten inside, festering, and depraved. Idhānanda, pāpabhikkhu dussÄ«lo hoti pāpadhammo asuci saį¹…kassarasamācāro paį¹­icchannakammanto assamaṇo samaṇapaį¹­iƱƱo abrahmacārÄ« brahmacāripaį¹­iƱƱo antopÅ«ti avassuto kasambujāto. He thinks: Tassa evaṁ hoti: ā€˜Suppose the monks know that I’m a bad monk … ā€˜sace kho maṁ bhikkhÅ« jānissanti—If they’re in harmony, they’ll expel me, dussÄ«lo pāpadhammo asuci saį¹…kassarasamācāro paį¹­icchannakammanto assamaṇo samaṇapaį¹­iƱƱo abrahmacārÄ« brahmacāripaį¹­iƱƱo antopÅ«ti avassuto kasambujātoti, samaggā maṁ santā nāsessanti; but if they’re divided they won’t.’ vaggā pana maṁ na nāsessantī’ti. A bad monk sees this as the first reason to relish schism in the Saį¹…gha. Idaṁ, ānanda, paį¹­hamaṁ atthavasaṁ sampassamāno pāpabhikkhu saį¹…ghabhedena nandati.

Furthermore, a bad monk has wrong view, he’s attached to an extremist view. Puna caparaṁ, ānanda, pāpabhikkhu micchādiį¹­į¹­hiko hoti, antaggāhikāya diį¹­į¹­hiyā samannāgato. He thinks: Tassa evaṁ hoti: ā€˜Suppose the monks know that I have wrong view … ā€˜sace kho maṁ bhikkhÅ« jānissanti—If they’re in harmony they’ll expel me, micchādiį¹­į¹­hiko antaggāhikāya diį¹­į¹­hiyā samannāgatoti, samaggā maṁ santā nāsessanti; but if they’re divided they won’t.’ vaggā pana maṁ na nāsessantī’ti. A bad monk sees this as the second reason to relish schism in the Saį¹…gha. Idaṁ, ānanda, dutiyaṁ atthavasaṁ sampassamāno pāpabhikkhu saį¹…ghabhedena nandati.

Furthermore, a bad monk has wrong livelihood and earns a living by wrong livelihood. Puna caparaṁ, ānanda, pāpabhikkhu micchāājÄ«vo hoti, micchāājÄ«vena jÄ«vikaṁ kappeti. He thinks: Tassa evaṁ hoti: ā€˜Suppose the monks know that I have wrong livelihood … ā€˜sace kho maṁ bhikkhÅ« jānissanti—If they’re in harmony they’ll expel me, micchāājÄ«vo micchāājÄ«vena jÄ«vikaṁ kappetÄ«ti, samaggā maṁ santā nāsessanti; but if they’re divided they won’t.’ vaggā pana maṁ na nāsessantī’ti. A bad monk sees this as the third reason to relish schism in the Saį¹…gha. Idaṁ, ānanda, tatiyaṁ atthavasaṁ sampassamāno pāpabhikkhu saį¹…ghabhedena nandati.

Furthermore, a bad monk desires material things, honor, and admiration. Puna caparaṁ, ānanda, pāpabhikkhu lābhakāmo hoti sakkārakāmo anavaƱƱattikāmo. He thinks: Tassa evaṁ hoti: ā€˜Suppose the monks know that I desire material things, honor, and admiration. ā€˜sace kho maṁ bhikkhÅ« jānissanti—If they’re in harmony they won’t honor, respect, revere, or venerate me, lābhakāmo sakkārakāmo anavaƱƱattikāmoti, samaggā maṁ santā na sakkarissanti na garuṁ karissanti na mānessanti na pÅ«jessanti; but if they’re divided they will.’ vaggā pana maṁ sakkarissanti garuṁ karissanti mānessanti pÅ«jessantī’ti. A bad monk sees this as the fourth reason to relish schism in the Saį¹…gha. Idaṁ, ānanda, catutthaṁ atthavasaṁ sampassamāno pāpabhikkhu saį¹…ghabhedena nandati.
