Schism in the Saį¹ gha Saį¹ ghabhedakasutta
At one time the Buddha was staying near KosambÄ«, in Ghositaās Monastery. Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavÄ kosambiyaį¹ viharati ghositÄrÄme. Then Venerable Änanda went up to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side. The Buddha said to him, Atha kho ÄyasmÄ Änando yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹ kami; upasaį¹ kamitvÄ bhagavantaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinnaį¹ kho Äyasmantaį¹ Änandaį¹ bhagavÄ etadavoca: āWell, Änanda, has that disciplinary issue been settled yet?ā āapi nu taį¹, Änanda, adhikaraį¹aį¹ vÅ«pasantanāti?
āHow could it be, sir? āKuto taį¹, bhante, adhikaraį¹aį¹ vÅ«pasamissati. Venerable Anuruddhaās protĆ©gĆ© BÄhiya remains entirely committed to creating a schism in the Saį¹ gha. Äyasmato, bhante, anuruddhassa bÄhiyo nÄma saddhivihÄriko kevalakappaį¹ saį¹ ghabhedÄya į¹hito. But Anuruddha doesnāt think to say a single word about it.ā TatrÄyasmÄ anuruddho na ekavÄcikampi bhaį¹itabbaį¹ maƱƱatÄ«āti.
āBut Änanda, since when has Anuruddha been involved in disciplinary issues in the midst of the Saį¹ gha? āKadÄ panÄnanda, anuruddho saį¹ ghamajjhe adhikaraį¹esu voyuƱjati. Shouldnāt you, together with SÄriputta and MoggallÄna, settle all disciplinary issues that come up? Nanu, Änanda, yÄni kÄnici adhikaraį¹Äni uppajjanti, sabbÄni tÄni tumhe ceva vÅ«pasametha sÄriputtamoggallÄnÄ ca.
A bad monk sees four reasons to relish schism in the Saį¹ gha. CattÄrome, Änanda, atthavase sampassamÄno pÄpabhikkhu saį¹ ghabhedena nandati. What four? Katame cattÄro? Take an unethical monk, of bad qualities, filthy, with suspicious behavior, underhand, no true ascetic or spiritual practitionerāthough claiming to be oneārotten inside, festering, and depraved. IdhÄnanda, pÄpabhikkhu dussÄ«lo hoti pÄpadhammo asuci saį¹ kassarasamÄcÄro paį¹icchannakammanto assamaį¹o samaį¹apaį¹iƱƱo abrahmacÄrÄ« brahmacÄripaį¹iƱƱo antopÅ«ti avassuto kasambujÄto. He thinks: Tassa evaį¹ hoti: āSuppose the monks know that Iām a bad monk ⦠āsace kho maį¹ bhikkhÅ« jÄnissantiāIf theyāre in harmony, theyāll expel me, dussÄ«lo pÄpadhammo asuci saį¹ kassarasamÄcÄro paį¹icchannakammanto assamaį¹o samaį¹apaį¹iƱƱo abrahmacÄrÄ« brahmacÄripaį¹iƱƱo antopÅ«ti avassuto kasambujÄtoti, samaggÄ maį¹ santÄ nÄsessanti; but if theyāre divided they wonāt.ā vaggÄ pana maį¹ na nÄsessantÄ«āti. A bad monk sees this as the first reason to relish schism in the Saį¹ gha. Idaį¹, Änanda, paį¹hamaį¹ atthavasaį¹ sampassamÄno pÄpabhikkhu saį¹ ghabhedena nandati.
Furthermore, a bad monk has wrong view, heās attached to an extremist view. Puna caparaį¹, Änanda, pÄpabhikkhu micchÄdiį¹į¹hiko hoti, antaggÄhikÄya diį¹į¹hiyÄ samannÄgato. He thinks: Tassa evaį¹ hoti: āSuppose the monks know that I have wrong view ⦠āsace kho maį¹ bhikkhÅ« jÄnissantiāIf theyāre in harmony theyāll expel me, micchÄdiį¹į¹hiko antaggÄhikÄya diį¹į¹hiyÄ samannÄgatoti, samaggÄ maį¹ santÄ nÄsessanti; but if theyāre divided they wonāt.ā vaggÄ pana maį¹ na nÄsessantÄ«āti. A bad monk sees this as the second reason to relish schism in the Saį¹ gha. Idaį¹, Änanda, dutiyaį¹ atthavasaį¹ sampassamÄno pÄpabhikkhu saį¹ ghabhedena nandati.
Furthermore, a bad monk has wrong livelihood and earns a living by wrong livelihood. Puna caparaį¹, Änanda, pÄpabhikkhu micchÄÄjÄ«vo hoti, micchÄÄjÄ«vena jÄ«vikaį¹ kappeti. He thinks: Tassa evaį¹ hoti: āSuppose the monks know that I have wrong livelihood ⦠āsace kho maį¹ bhikkhÅ« jÄnissantiāIf theyāre in harmony theyāll expel me, micchÄÄjÄ«vo micchÄÄjÄ«vena jÄ«vikaį¹ kappetÄ«ti, samaggÄ maį¹ santÄ nÄsessanti; but if theyāre divided they wonāt.ā vaggÄ pana maį¹ na nÄsessantÄ«āti. A bad monk sees this as the third reason to relish schism in the Saį¹ gha. Idaį¹, Änanda, tatiyaį¹ atthavasaį¹ sampassamÄno pÄpabhikkhu saį¹ ghabhedena nandati.
Furthermore, a bad monk desires material things, honor, and admiration. Puna caparaį¹, Änanda, pÄpabhikkhu lÄbhakÄmo hoti sakkÄrakÄmo anavaƱƱattikÄmo. He thinks: Tassa evaį¹ hoti: āSuppose the monks know that I desire material things, honor, and admiration. āsace kho maį¹ bhikkhÅ« jÄnissantiāIf theyāre in harmony they wonāt honor, respect, revere, or venerate me, lÄbhakÄmo sakkÄrakÄmo anavaƱƱattikÄmoti, samaggÄ maį¹ santÄ na sakkarissanti na garuį¹ karissanti na mÄnessanti na pÅ«jessanti; but if theyāre divided they will.ā vaggÄ pana maį¹ sakkarissanti garuį¹ karissanti mÄnessanti pÅ«jessantÄ«āti. A bad monk sees this as the fourth reason to relish schism in the Saį¹ gha. Idaį¹, Änanda, catutthaį¹ atthavasaį¹ sampassamÄno pÄpabhikkhu saį¹ ghabhedena nandati.
