Powers in Brief Saṅkhittabalasutta
So I have heard. Evaṁ me sutaṁ—At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery. … ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṁ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme …pe… “Mendicants, there are these seven powers. sattimāni, bhikkhave, balāni. What seven? Katamāni satta? The powers of faith, energy, conscience, prudence, mindfulness, immersion, and wisdom. Saddhābalaṁ, vīriyabalaṁ, hirībalaṁ, ottappabalaṁ, satibalaṁ, samādhibalaṁ, paññābalaṁ. These are the seven powers. Imāni kho, bhikkhave, satta balānīti.
The powers are faith and energy, Saddhābalaṁ vīriyañca, conscience and prudence, hirī ottappiyaṁ balaṁ; mindfulness and immersion, Satibalaṁ samādhi ca, and wisdom as the seventh power. paññā ve sattamaṁ balaṁ; Empowered by these, Etehi balavā bhikkhu, an astute mendicant lives happily. sukhaṁ jīvati paṇḍito.
They should examine the teaching rationally, Yoniso vicine dhammaṁ, discerning the meaning with wisdom. paññāyatthaṁ vipassati; The liberation of their heart Pajjotasseva nibbānaṁ, is like a lamp going out.” vimokkho hoti cetaso”ti.
