Fetters Saṁyojanasutta

ā€œMendicants, there are ten fetters. ā€œDasayimāni, bhikkhave, saṁyojanāni. What ten? Katamāni dasa? The five lower fetters and the five higher fetters. PaƱcorambhāgiyāni saṁyojanāni, paƱcuddhambhāgiyāni saṁyojanāni. What are the five lower fetters? Katamāni paƱcorambhāgiyāni saṁyojanāni? Substantialist view, doubt, misapprehension of precepts and observances, sensual desire, and ill will. Sakkāyadiį¹­į¹­hi, vicikicchā, sÄ«labbataparāmāso, kāmacchando, byāpādo—These are the five lower fetters. imāni paƱcorambhāgiyāni saṁyojanāni.

What are the five higher fetters? Katamāni paƱcuddhambhāgiyāni saṁyojanāni? Desire for rebirth in the realm of luminous form, desire for rebirth in the formless realm, conceit, restlessness, and ignorance. RÅ«parāgo, arÅ«parāgo, māno, uddhaccaṁ, avijjā—These are the five higher fetters. imāni paƱcuddhambhāgiyāni saṁyojanāni. These are the ten fetters.ā€ Imāni kho, bhikkhave, dasa saṁyojanānÄ«ā€ti.
