A True Person Sappurisasutta

ā€œMendicants, an untrue person can be known by four qualities. ā€œCatÅ«hi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannāgato asappuriso veditabbo. What four? Katamehi catÅ«hi?

To start with, an untrue person speaks ill of another even when not asked, let alone when asked. Idha, bhikkhave, asappuriso yo hoti parassa avaṇṇo taṁ apuį¹­į¹­hopi pātu karoti, ko pana vādo puį¹­į¹­hassa. But when summoned for questioning they speak ill of another in full detail, not leaving anything out. Puį¹­į¹­ho kho pana paƱhābhinÄ«to ahāpetvā alambitvā paripÅ«raṁ vitthārena parassa avaṇṇaṁ bhāsitā hoti. That’s how to know that this is an untrue person. Veditabbametaṁ, bhikkhave, asappuriso ayaṁ bhavanti.

Furthermore, an untrue person doesn’t speak well of another even when asked, let alone when not asked. Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, asappuriso yo hoti parassa vaṇṇo taṁ puį¹­į¹­hopi na pātu karoti, ko pana vādo apuį¹­į¹­hassa. But when summoned for questioning they speak well of another without giving the full details, leaving many things out. Puį¹­į¹­ho kho pana paƱhābhinÄ«to hāpetvā lambitvā aparipÅ«raṁ avitthārena parassa vaṇṇaṁ bhāsitā hoti. That’s how to know that this is an untrue person. Veditabbametaṁ, bhikkhave, asappuriso ayaṁ bhavanti.

A true person can be known by four qualities. Catūhi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannāgato sappuriso veditabbo. What four? Katamehi catūhi?

It’s like a bride on the day or night she’s first brought to her husband’s home. Right away she sets up a keen sense of conscience and prudence for her mother and father in law, her husband, and even the bondservants, workers, and staff. Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, vadhukā yaƱƱadeva rattiṁ vā divaṁ vā ānÄ«tā hoti, tāvadevassā tibbaṁ hirottappaṁ paccupaį¹­į¹­hitaṁ hoti sassuyāpi sasurepi sāmikepi antamaso dāsakammakaraporisesu. But after some time, because of living together and familiarity, she’ll even say to her mother and father in law, or to her husband: Sā aparena samayena saṁvāsamanvāya vissāsamanvāya sassumpi sasurampi sāmikampi evamāha: ā€˜Go away! What would you know?’ ā€˜apetha, kiṁ pana tumhe jānāthā’ti. In the same way, on the day or night a mendicant first goes forth from the lay life to homelessness, right away they set up a keen sense of conscience and prudence for the monks, nuns, laymen, and laywomen, and even the monastery workers and novices. Evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, idhekacco bhikkhu yaƱƱadeva rattiṁ vā divaṁ vā agārasmā anagāriyaṁ pabbajito hoti, tāvadevassa tibbaṁ hirottappaṁ paccupaį¹­į¹­hitaṁ hoti bhikkhÅ«su bhikkhunÄ«su upāsakesu upāsikāsu antamaso ārāmikasamaṇuddesesu. But after some time, because of living together and familiarity, they’ll even say to their tutor or mentor: So aparena samayena saṁvāsamanvāya vissāsamanvāya ācariyampi upajjhāyampi evamāha: ā€˜Go away! What would you know?’ ā€˜apetha, kiṁ pana tumhe jānāthā’ti.

So you should train like this: Tasmātiha, bhikkhave, evaṁ sikkhitabbaṁ: ā€˜We will live with hearts like that of a newly wedded bride.’ ā€˜adhunāgatavadhukāsamena cetasā viharissāmā’ti. That’s how you should train.ā€ EvaƱhi vo, bhikkhave, sikkhitabbanā€ti.
