A Hundred Spears Sattisatasutta
āMendicants, suppose there was a man with a lifespan of a hundred years. āSeyyathÄpi, bhikkhave, puriso vassasatÄyuko vassasatajÄ«vÄ«. And someone might say to him: Tamenaį¹ evaį¹ vadeyya: āCome now, my good man, theyāll strike you with a hundred spears in the morning, at midday, and in the late afternoon. āehambho purisa, pubbaį¹hasamayaį¹ taį¹ sattisatena hanissanti, majjhanhikasamayaį¹ sattisatena hanissanti, sÄyanhasamayaį¹ sattisatena hanissanti. And youāll live for a hundred years being struck with three hundred spears every day. But when a hundred years have passed, you will comprehend the four noble truths for the first time.ā So kho tvaį¹, ambho purisa, divase divase tÄ«hi tÄ«hi sattisatehi haƱƱamÄno vassasatÄyuko vassasatajÄ«vÄ« vassasatassa accayena anabhisametÄni cattÄri ariyasaccÄni abhisamessasÄ«āti.
For an earnest gentleman this is sufficient reason to submit. Atthavasikena, bhikkhave, kulaputtena alaį¹ upagantuį¹.
Why is that? Taį¹ kissa hetu? This transmigration has no known beginning. Anamataggoyaį¹, bhikkhave, saį¹sÄro; No first point is found of blows by spears, swords, arrows, and axes. pubbÄ koį¹i nappaƱƱÄyati sattippahÄrÄnaį¹ asippahÄrÄnaį¹ usuppahÄrÄnaį¹ pharasuppahÄrÄnaį¹. Na kho panÄhaį¹, bhikkhave, saha dukkhena, saha domanassena catunnaį¹ ariyasaccÄnaį¹ abhisamayaį¹ vadÄmi; Rather, the comprehension of the four noble truths comes only with pleasure and happiness, I say. api cÄhaį¹, bhikkhave, sahÄva sukhena, sahÄva somanassena catunnaį¹ ariyasaccÄnaį¹ abhisamayaį¹ vadÄmi. What four? Katamesaį¹ catunnaį¹? The noble truths of suffering, its origin, its cessation, and the path. Dukkhassa ariyasaccassa ā¦pe⦠dukkhanirodhagÄminiyÄ paį¹ipadÄya ariyasaccassa.
Thatās why you should practice meditation ā¦ā TasmÄtiha, bhikkhave, āidaį¹ dukkhanāti yogo karaį¹Ä«yo ā¦pe⦠āayaį¹ dukkhanirodhagÄminÄ« paį¹ipadÄāti yogo karaį¹Ä«yoāti.
