A Trainee Sekkhasutta

At Sāvatthī. Sāvatthinidānaṁ.

Then a mendicant went up to the Buddha … and asked him, Atha kho aƱƱataro bhikkhu yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami …pe… ekamantaṁ nisinno kho so bhikkhu bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: ā€œSir, they speak of the one called ā€˜a trainee’. ā€œā€˜sekkho, sekkho’ti, bhante, vuccati. How is a trainee defined?ā€ Kittāvatā nu kho, bhante, sekkho hotÄ«ā€ti?

ā€œMendicant, it’s someone who has a trainee’s right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right immersion. ā€œIdha, bhikkhu, sekkhāya sammādiį¹į¹hiyā samannāgato hoti …pe… sekkhena sammāsamādhinā samannāgato hoti. That’s how a trainee is defined.ā€ Ettāvatā kho, bhikkhu, sekkho hotÄ«ā€ti.

Tatiyaṁ.
