Lying Postures SeyyÄsutta
āMendicants, there are these four ways of lying down. āCatasso imÄ, bhikkhave, seyyÄ. What four? KatamÄ catasso? The ways a corpse, a pleasure seeker, a lion, and a Realized One lie down. PetaseyyÄ, kÄmabhogiseyyÄ, sÄ«haseyyÄ, tathÄgataseyyÄ.
And how does a corpse lie down? KatamÄ ca, bhikkhave, petaseyyÄ? Corpses usually lie flat on their backs. Yebhuyyena, bhikkhave, petÄ uttÄnÄ senti; This is called the way a corpse lies down. ayaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, petaseyyÄ.
And how does a pleasure seeker lie down? KatamÄ ca, bhikkhave, kÄmabhogiseyyÄ? Pleasure seekers usually lie down on their left side. Yebhuyyena, bhikkhave, kÄmabhogÄ« vÄmena passena senti; This is called the way a pleasure seeker lies down. ayaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, kÄmabhogiseyyÄ.
And how does a lion lie down? KatamÄ ca, bhikkhave, sÄ«haseyyÄ? The lion, king of beasts, lies down on the right side, placing one foot on top of the other, with his tail tucked between his thighs. SÄ«ho, bhikkhave, migarÄjÄ dakkhiį¹ena passena seyyaį¹ kappeti, pÄde pÄdaį¹ accÄdhÄya, antarasatthimhi naį¹ guį¹į¹haį¹ anupakkhipitvÄ. When he wakes, he lifts his front quarters and checks his hind quarters. So paį¹ibujjhitvÄ purimaį¹ kÄyaį¹ abbhunnÄmetvÄ pacchimaį¹ kÄyaį¹ anuviloketi. If he sees that any part of his body is disordered or displaced, he is displeased. Sace, bhikkhave, sÄ«ho migarÄjÄ kiƱci passati kÄyassa vikkhittaį¹ vÄ visaį¹aį¹ vÄ, tena, bhikkhave, sÄ«ho migarÄjÄ anattamano hoti. But if he sees that no part of his body is disordered or displaced, he is pleased. Sace pana, bhikkhave, sÄ«ho migarÄjÄ na kiƱci passati kÄyassa vikkhittaį¹ vÄ visaį¹aį¹ vÄ, tena, bhikkhave, sÄ«ho migarÄjÄ attamano hoti. This is called the way a lion lies down. Ayaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, sÄ«haseyyÄ.
And how does a Realized One lie down? KatamÄ ca, bhikkhave, tathÄgataseyyÄ? Itās when a Realized One, quite secluded from sensual pleasures, secluded from unskillful qualities, enters and remains in the first absorption ⦠second absorption ⦠third absorption ⦠fourth absorption. Idha, bhikkhave, tathÄgato vivicceva kÄmehi ā¦pe⦠catutthaį¹ jhÄnaį¹ upasampajja viharati. This is called the way a Realized One lies down. Ayaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, tathÄgataseyyÄ.
