Sirimaṇḍa Sirimaṇḍattheragāthā
The rain saturates things that are covered up; “Channamativassati, it doesn’t saturate things that are open. vivaṭaṁ nātivassati; Therefore you should open up a covered thing, Tasmā channaṁ vivaretha, so the rain will not saturate it. evaṁ taṁ nātivassati.
The world is beaten down by death Maccunābbhahato loko, and surrounded by old age. jarāya parivārito; The dart of craving has struck it down, Taṇhāsallena otiṇṇo, and it’s always fuming with desire. icchādhūpāyito sadā.
The world is beaten down by death, Maccunābbhahato loko, caged by old age, parikkhitto jarāya ca; beaten constantly without respite, Haññati niccamattāṇo, like a thief being flogged. pattadaṇḍova takkaro.
Three things are coming, like a wall of flame: Āgacchantaggikhandhāva, death, disease, and old age. maccu byādhi jarā tayo; No power can stand before them, Paccuggantuṁ balaṁ natthi, and no speed’s enough to flee. javo natthi palāyituṁ.
Don’t waste your day, Amoghaṁ divasaṁ kayirā, a little or a lot. appena bahukena vā; Every night that passes Yaṁ yaṁ vijahate rattiṁ, shortens your life by that much. tadūnaṁ tassa jīvitaṁ.
Walking or standing, Carato tiṭṭhato vāpi, sitting or lying down: āsīnasayanassa vā; your final night draws near; Upeti carimā ratti, you have no time to be careless. na te kālo pamajjitun”ti.
