Grace Sobhanasutta

“Mendicants, these four who are competent, educated, assured, and learned, who have memorized the teachings and practice in line with the teaching, grace the Saṅgha. “Cattārome, bhikkhave, viyattā vinītā visāradā bahussutā dhammadharā dhammānudhammappaṭipannā saṅghaṁ sobhenti. What four? Katame cattāro? A monk, Bhikkhu, bhikkhave, viyatto vinīto visārado bahussuto dhammadharo dhammānudhammappaṭipanno saṅghaṁ sobheti. a nun, Bhikkhunī, bhikkhave, viyattā vinītā visāradā bahussutā dhammadharā dhammānudhammappaṭipannā saṅghaṁ sobheti. a layman, Upāsako, bhikkhave, viyatto vinīto visārado bahussuto dhammadharo dhammānudhammappaṭipanno saṅghaṁ sobheti. and a laywoman. Upāsikā, bhikkhave, viyattā vinītā visāradā bahussutā dhammadharā dhammānudhammappaṭipannā saṅghaṁ sobheti.

These four who are competent, educated, assured, and learned, who have memorized the teachings and practice in line with the teaching, grace the Saṅgha. Ime kho, bhikkhave, cattāro viyattā vinītā visāradā bahussutā dhammadharā dhammānudhammappaṭipannā saṅghaṁ sobhentīti.

Whoever is competent and assured, Yo hoti viyatto ca visārado ca, learned, a memorizer of the teachings, Bahussuto dhammadharo ca hoti; who lives in line with the teaching—Dhammassa hoti anudhammacārī, such a one is said to grace the Saṅgha. Sa tādiso vuccati saṅghasobhano.

A monk accomplished in ethics, Bhikkhu ca sīlasampanno, and a learned nun, bhikkhunī ca bahussutā; a faithful layman, Upāsako ca yo saddho, and a faithful laywoman, too: yā ca saddhā upāsikā; these grace the Saṅgha, Ete kho saṅghaṁ sobhenti, they are the graces of the Saṅgha.” ete hi saṅghasobhanā”ti.
