Soṇakoḷivisa Soṇakoḷivisattheragāthā

He who was special in the kingdom, “Yāhu raṭṭhe samukkaṭṭho, the footman to the king of Aṅga, rañño aṅgassa paddhagū; today is special in the Dhamma—Svajja dhammesu ukkaṭṭho, Soṇa has gone beyond suffering. soṇo dukkhassa pāragū.

Five to cut, five to drop, Pañca chinde pañca jahe, and five more to develop. pañca cuttari bhāvaye; When a mendicant slips five chains Pañca saṅgātigo bhikkhu, they’re said to have crossed the flood. oghatiṇṇoti vuccati.

If a monk is insolent and negligent, Unnaḷassa pamattassa, concerned only with externals, bāhirāsassa bhikkhuno; their ethics, immersion, and wisdom Sīlaṁ samādhi paññā ca, do not become fulfilled. pāripūriṁ na gacchati.

They dump what should be done, Yañhi kiccaṁ apaviddhaṁ, and do what should not be done. akiccaṁ pana karīyati; For the insolent and the negligent, Unnaḷānaṁ pamattānaṁ, their defilements only grow. tesaṁ vaḍḍhanti āsavā.

Those that have properly undertaken Yesañca susamāraddhā, constant mindfulness of the body, niccaṁ kāyagatā sati; don’t cultivate what should not be done, Akiccaṁ te na sevanti, but always do what should be done. kicce sātaccakārino; Mindful and aware, Satānaṁ sampajānānaṁ, their defilements come to an end. atthaṁ gacchanti āsavā.

The straight path has been explained—Ujumaggamhi akkhāte, go on it and don’t turn back. gacchatha mā nivattatha; Urge yourself on Attanā codayattānaṁ, and take yourself to extinguishment. nibbānamabhihāraye.

When my energy was over-exerted, Accāraddhamhi vīriyamhi, the supreme Teacher in the world satthā loke anuttaro; created the simile of the arched harp for me. Vīṇopamaṁ karitvā me, The Clear-eyed One taught the Dhamma, dhammaṁ desesi cakkhumā; and when I heard what he said, Tassāhaṁ vacanaṁ sutvā, I happily did his bidding. vihāsiṁ sāsane rato.

Practicing serenity of mind Samathaṁ paṭipādesiṁ, for the attainment of the highest goal. uttamatthassa pattiyā; I’ve attained the three knowledges Tisso vijjā anuppattā, and fulfilled the Buddha’s instructions. kataṁ buddhassa sāsanaṁ.

When you’re dedicated to renunciation Nekkhamme adhimuttassa, and seclusion of the heart; pavivekañca cetaso; when you’re dedicated to kindness Abyāpajjādhimuttassa, and the end of grasping; upādānakkhayassa ca.

when you’re dedicated to the ending of craving Taṇhakkhayādhimuttassa, and clarity of heart; asammohañca cetaso; and you’ve seen the arising of the senses, Disvā āyatanuppādaṁ, your mind is rightly freed. sammā cittaṁ vimuccati.

For that one, rightly freed, Tassa sammā vimuttassa, a mendicant with peaceful mind, santacittassa bhikkhuno; there’s nothing to be improved, Katassa paṭicayo natthi, and nothing more to do. karaṇīyaṁ na vijjati.

As the wind cannot stir Selo yathā ekagghano, a solid mass of rock, vātena na samīrati; so too sights, tastes, sounds, Evaṁ rūpā rasā saddā, smells, and touches—the lot—gandhā phassā ca kevalā.

and ideas, whether liked or disliked, Iṭṭhā dhammā aniṭṭhā ca, don’t disturb the unaffected one. nappavedhenti tādino; Their mind is steady and unfettered Ṭhitaṁ cittaṁ visaññuttaṁ, as they observe fall. vayañcassānupassatī”ti.

Soṇo koḷiviso thero, ekoyeva mahiddhiko; Terasamhi nipātamhi, gāthāyo cettha terasāti.
