Subhūti Subhūtittheragāthā
Background Nidānagāthā
Homage to that Blessed One, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha! Namo tassa Bhagavato Arahato Sammāsambuddhassa.
Like the lions of mighty fang Sīhānaṁva nadantānaṁ, who roar in mountain caves—dāṭhīnaṁ girigabbhare; hear now from those who’ve practiced well Suṇātha bhāvitattānaṁ, their own verses about themselves. gāthā atthūpanāyikā.
What their name, and what their clan, Yathānāmā yathāgottā, and how they lived by the teaching; yathādhammavihārino; how dedicated were those wise ones, Yathādhimuttā sappaññā, as they meditated tirelessly. vihariṁsu atanditā.
Clearly discerning in every case, Tattha tattha vipassitvā, they reached the state that does not pass. phusitvā accutaṁ padaṁ; Reviewing their completed task, Katantaṁ paccavekkhantā, they spoke about it in these words. imamatthamabhāsisuṁ.
Subhūti Subhūtittheragāthā
My hut is roofed and pleasant, sheltered from the wind: “Channā me kuṭikā sukhā nivātā, so rain, heavens, as you please! Vassa deva yathāsukhaṁ; My mind is serene and freed, Cittaṁ me susamāhitaṁ vimuttaṁ, I practice wholeheartedly: so rain, heavens! Ātāpī viharāmi vassa devā”ti.
That is how this verse was recited by the senior venerable Subhūti. Itthaṁ sudaṁ āyasmā subhūtitthero gāthaṁ abhāsitthāti.
