Sumana (1st) Sumanattheragāthā
My mentor helped me to learn, “Yaṁ patthayāno dhammesu, hoping I would practice those teachings. upajjhāyo anuggahi; Aspiring to freedom from death, Amataṁ abhikaṅkhantaṁ, I’ve done what had to be done. kataṁ kattabbakaṁ mayā.
I’ve realized the Dhamma, Anuppatto sacchikato, witnessing it for myself, not based on hearsay. sayaṁ dhammo anītiho; With purified knowledge, free of doubt, Visuddhañāṇo nikkaṅkho, I declare it in your presence. byākaromi tavantike.
I know my past lives, Pubbenivāsaṁ jānāmi, my clairvoyance is purified, dibbacakkhu visodhitaṁ; I’ve realized my heart’s goal, Sadattho me anuppatto, and fulfilled the Buddha’s instructions. kataṁ buddhassa sāsanaṁ.
Being diligent in the training, Appamattassa me sikkhā, I learned your teachings well. sussutā tava sāsane; All my defilements are ended; Sabbe me āsavā khīṇā, now there’ll be no more future lives. natthi dāni punabbhavo.
You advised me in noble observances; Anusāsi maṁ ariyavatā, sympathetic, you helped teach me. Anukampi anuggahi; Your instruction was not in vain—Amogho tuyhamovādo, I, your pupil, am fully trained. Antevāsimhi sikkhito”ti.
