The Fetter of Craving Taṇhāsaṁyojanasutta

This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard. Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ:

“Mendicants, I do not see a single fetter, fettered by which people wander and transmigrate for a long time like the fetter of craving. “Nāhaṁ, bhikkhave, aññaṁ ekasaṁyojanampi samanupassāmi yena saṁyojanena saṁyuttā sattā dīgharattaṁ sandhāvanti saṁsaranti yathayidaṁ, bhikkhave, taṇhāsaṁyojanaṁ. Fettered by craving, people wander and transmigrate for a long time.” Taṇhāsaṁyojanena hi, bhikkhave, saṁyuttā sattā dīgharattaṁ sandhāvanti saṁsarantī”ti.

The Buddha spoke this matter. Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca. On this it is said: Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati:

“Craving is a person’s partner “Taṇhādutiyo puriso, as they transmigrate on this long journey. dīghamaddhāna saṁsaraṁ; They go from this state to another, Itthabhāvaññathābhāvaṁ, but don’t escape transmigration. saṁsāraṁ nātivattati.

Knowing this danger, Etamādīnavaṁ ñatvā, that craving is the cause of suffering—Taṇhaṁ dukkhassa sambhavaṁ; rid of craving, free of grasping, Vītataṇho anādāno, a mendicant would wander mindful.” Sato bhikkhu paribbaje”ti.

This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard. Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.

Pañcamaṁ.
