At SÄvatthÄ«. SÄvatthiyaį¹ viharati.
āMendicants, suppose a person was to place on Sineru, the king of mountains, seven pebbles the size of mung beans. āSeyyathÄpi, bhikkhave, puriso sinerussa pabbatarÄjassa satta muggamattiyo pÄsÄį¹asakkharÄ upanikkhipeyya.
What do you think, mendicants? Taį¹ kiį¹ maƱƱatha, bhikkhave, Which is more: the seven pebbles the size of mung beans, or Sineru, the king of mountains?ā katamaį¹ nu kho bahutaraį¹, yÄ vÄ satta muggamattiyo pÄsÄį¹asakkharÄ upanikkhittÄ yo vÄ sineru pabbatarÄjÄāti?
āSir, Sineru, the king of mountains, is certainly more. āEtadeva, bhante, bahutaraį¹ yadidaį¹ sineru pabbatarÄjÄ; The seven pebbles the size of mung beans are tiny. appamattikÄ satta muggamattiyo pÄsÄį¹asakkharÄ upanikkhittÄ. Compared to Sineru, itās not nearly a hundredth, a thousandth, or a hundred thousandth part.ā Neva satimaį¹ kalaį¹ upenti na sahassimaį¹ kalaį¹ upenti na satasahassimaį¹ kalaį¹ upenti sineruį¹ pabbatarÄjÄnaį¹ upanidhÄya satta muggamattiyo pÄsÄį¹asakkharÄ upanikkhittÄāti.
āIn the same way, compared with the achievements of a noble disciple accomplished in view, the achievements of the ascetics, brahmins, and wanderers of other religions is not nearly a hundredth, a thousandth, or a hundred thousandth part. āEvameva kho, bhikkhave, ariyasÄvakassa diį¹į¹hisampannassa puggalassa adhigamaį¹ upanidhÄya aƱƱatitthiyasamaį¹abrÄhmaį¹aparibbÄjakÄnaį¹ adhigamo neva satimaį¹ kalaį¹ upeti na sahassimaį¹ kalaį¹ upeti na satasahassimaį¹ kalaį¹ upeti. So great is the achievement of the person accomplished in view, so great is their direct knowledge.ā Evaį¹ mahÄdhigamo, bhikkhave, diį¹į¹hisampanno puggalo, evaį¹ mahÄbhiƱƱoāti.
