āMendicants, there are these five faculties. āPaƱcimÄni, bhikkhave, indriyÄni. What five? KatamÄni paƱca? The faculties of pleasure, pain, happiness, sadness, and equanimity. Sukhindriyaį¹, dukkhindriyaį¹, somanassindriyaį¹, domanassindriyaį¹, upekkhindriyaį¹.
And what is the faculty of pleasure? KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, sukhindriyaį¹? Physical enjoyment, physical pleasure, the enjoyable, pleasant feeling thatās born from physical contact. Yaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, kÄyikaį¹ sukhaį¹, kÄyikaį¹ sÄtaį¹, kÄyasamphassajaį¹ sukhaį¹ sÄtaį¹ vedayitaį¹āThis is called the faculty of pleasure. idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, sukhindriyaį¹.
And what is the faculty of pain? KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, dukkhindriyaį¹? Physical pain, physical unpleasantness, the painful, unpleasant feeling thatās born from physical contact. And what is the faculty of sadness? KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, domanassindriyaį¹? Mental pain, mental displeasure, the painful, unpleasant feeling thatās born from mind contact. Yaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, cetasikaį¹ dukkhaį¹, cetasikaį¹ asÄtaį¹, manosamphassajaį¹ dukkhaį¹ asÄtaį¹ vedayitaį¹āThis is called the faculty of sadness. idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, domanassindriyaį¹.
And what is the faculty of equanimity? KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, upekkhindriyaį¹? Neither pleasant nor unpleasant feeling, whether physical or mental. Yaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, kÄyikaį¹ vÄ cetasikaį¹ vÄ neva sÄtaį¹ nÄsÄtaį¹ vedayitaį¹āThis is the faculty of equanimity. idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, upekkhindriyaį¹.
In this context, the faculties of pleasure and happiness should be seen as pleasant feeling. Tatra, bhikkhave, yaƱca sukhindriyaį¹ yaƱca somanassindriyaį¹, sukhÄ sÄ vedanÄ daį¹į¹habbÄ. The faculties of pain and sadness should be seen as painful feeling. Tatra, bhikkhave, yaƱca dukkhindriyaį¹ yaƱca domanassindriyaį¹, dukkhÄ sÄ vedanÄ daį¹į¹habbÄ. The faculty of equanimity should be seen as neutral feeling. Tatra, bhikkhave, yadidaį¹ upekkhindriyaį¹, adukkhamasukhÄ sÄ vedanÄ daį¹į¹habbÄ.
Thatās how these five faculties, depending on how theyāre explained, having been five become three, and having been three become five.ā Iti kho, bhikkhave, imÄni paƱcindriyÄni paƱca hutvÄ tÄ«į¹i honti, tÄ«į¹i hutvÄ paƱca honti pariyÄyenÄāti.
