The Questions of Tissametteyya Tissametteyyamāṇavapucchā
“Who here in the world is content?” “Kodha santusito loke, said Venerable Tissametteyya. (iccāyasmā tissametteyyo) “Who has no disturbances? Kassa no santi iñjitā; What thoughtful one, having known both ends, Ko ubhantamabhiññāya, is not stuck in the middle? Majjhe mantā na lippati; Who do they say is a great man? Kaṁ brūsi mahāpurisoti, Who here has escaped the seamstress?” Ko idha sibbinimaccagā”.
“Leading the spiritual life among sensual pleasures,” “Kāmesu brahmacariyavā, replied the Buddha, (metteyyāti bhagavā) “rid of craving, ever mindful; Vītataṇho sadā sato; a mendicant who, after appraisal, is quenched: Saṅkhāya nibbuto bhikkhu, that’s who has no disturbances. Tassa no santi iñjitā.
That thoughtful one, having known both ends, So ubhantamabhiññāya, is not stuck in the middle. Majjhe mantā na lippati; He is a great man, I declare, Taṁ brūmi mahāpurisoti, he has escaped the seamstress here.” So idha sibbinimaccagā”ti.
