The Questions of Udaya Udayamāṇavapucchā
“To the meditator, rid of hopes,” “Jhāyiṁ virajamāsīnaṁ, said Venerable Udaya, (iccāyasmā udayo) “who has completed the task, is free of defilements, Katakiccaṁ anāsavaṁ; and has gone beyond all things, Pāraguṁ sabbadhammānaṁ, I have come seeking with a question. Atthi pañhena āgamaṁ; Tell me the liberation by enlightenment, Aññāvimokkhaṁ pabrūhi, the smashing of ignorance.” Avijjāya pabhedanaṁ”.
“The giving up of both” “Pahānaṁ kāmacchandānaṁ, replied the Buddha, (udayāti bhagavā) “sensual desires and displeasures; Domanassāna cūbhayaṁ; the casting aside of dullness, Thinassa ca panūdanaṁ, and the prevention of remorse; Kukkuccānaṁ nivāraṇaṁ.
pure equanimity and mindfulness, Upekkhāsatisaṁsuddhaṁ, preceded by investigation of principles—dhammatakkapurejavaṁ; this, I declare, is liberation by enlightenment, Aññāvimokkhaṁ pabrūmi, the smashing of ignorance.” avijjāya pabhedanaṁ”.
“What fetters the world? “Kiṁsu saṁyojano loko, How does it travel about? kiṁsu tassa vicāraṇaṁ; With the giving up of what Kissassa vippahānena, is extinguishment spoken of?” nibbānaṁ iti vuccati”.
“Delight fetters the world. “Nandisaṁyojano loko, It travels about by means of thought. vitakkassa vicāraṇaṁ; With the giving up of craving Taṇhāya vippahānena, extinguishment is spoken of.” nibbānaṁ iti vuccati”.
“For one living mindfully, “Kathaṁ satassa carato, how does consciousness cease? viññāṇaṁ uparujjhati; We’ve come to ask you, worthy sir: Bhagavantaṁ puṭṭhumāgamma, let us hear what you say.” taṁ suṇoma vaco tava”.
“Not taking pleasure in feeling “Ajjhattañca bahiddhā ca, internally and externally—Vedanaṁ nābhinandato; for one living mindfully, Evaṁ satassa carato, that’s how consciousness ceases.” Viññāṇaṁ uparujjhatī”ti.
