Uruveḷakassapa Uruveḷakassapattheragāthā
Seeing the demonstrations “Disvāna pāṭihīrāni, of the renowned Gotama gotamassa yasassino; was not enough for me to bow to him—Na tāvāhaṁ paṇipatiṁ, I was blinded by jealousy and conceit. issāmānena vañcito.
Knowing my thoughts, Mama saṅkappamaññāya, the trainer of men scolded me. codesi narasārathi; I was struck with a sense of urgency, Tato me āsi saṁvego, so astonishing and hair-raising! abbhuto lomahaṁsano.
Setting aside the petty powers Pubbe jaṭilabhūtassa, I had before as a matted-hair ascetic, yā me siddhi parittikā; I then went forth Tāhaṁ tadā nirākatvā, in the victor’s instruction. pabbajiṁ jinasāsane.
I used to be content with sacrifice, Pubbe yaññena santuṭṭho, the realm of sensual pleasures was my priority. kāmadhātupurakkhato; But later I eradicated desire, Pacchā rāgañca dosañca, and hatred and also delusion. mohañcāpi samūhaniṁ.
I know my past lives; Pubbenivāsaṁ jānāmi, my clairvoyance is clarified; dibbacakkhu visodhitaṁ; I have psychic powers, and know the minds of others; Iddhimā paracittaññū, I have attained clairaudience. dibbasotañca pāpuṇiṁ.
I’ve attained the goal Yassa catthāya pabbajito, for the sake of which I went forth agārasmānagāriyaṁ; from the lay life to homelessness—So me attho anuppatto, the ending of all fetters. sabbasaṁyojanakkhayo”ti.
