With Uttiya Uttiyasutta

At Sāvatthī. Sāvatthinidānaṁ.

Then Venerable Uttiya went up to the Buddha … and asked him, Atha kho āyasmā uttiyo yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami …pe… ekamantaṁ nisinno kho āyasmā uttiyo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: ā€œJust now, sir, as I was in private retreat this thought came to mind. ā€œidha mayhaṁ, bhante, rahogatassa paį¹­isallÄ«nassa evaṁ cetaso parivitakko udapādi: ā€˜The Buddha has spoken of the five kinds of sensual stimulation. ā€˜paƱca kāmaguṇā vuttā bhagavatā. What are they?ā€™ā€ Katame nu kho paƱca kāmaguṇā vuttā bhagavatÄā€™ā€ti?

ā€œGood, good, Uttiya! ā€œSādhu sādhu, uttiya. I have spoken of these five kinds of sensual stimulation. PaƱcime kho, uttiya, kāmaguṇā vuttā mayā. What five? Katame paƱca? Sights known by the eye, which are likable, desirable, agreeable, pleasant, sensual, and arousing. CakkhuviƱƱeyyā rÅ«pā iį¹­į¹­hā kantā manāpā piyarÅ«pā kāmÅ«pasaṁhitā rajanÄ«yā, Sounds known by the ear … sotaviƱƱeyyā saddā …pe… Smells known by the nose … ghānaviƱƱeyyā gandhā …pe… Tastes known by the tongue … jivhāviƱƱeyyā rasā …pe… Touches known by the body, which are likable, desirable, agreeable, pleasant, sensual, and arousing. kāyaviƱƱeyyā phoį¹­į¹­habbā iį¹­į¹­hā kantā manāpā piyarÅ«pā kāmÅ«pasaṁhitā rajanÄ«yā—These are the five kinds of sensual stimulation that I’ve spoken of. ime kho, uttiya, paƱca kāmaguṇā vuttā mayā.

The noble eightfold path should be developed to give up these five kinds of sensual stimulation. Imesaṁ kho, uttiya, paƱcannaṁ kāmaguṇānaṁ pahānāya ariyo aį¹­į¹­haį¹…giko maggo bhāvetabbo. What is the noble eightfold path? Katamo ariyo aį¹­į¹­haį¹…giko maggo? It is right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right immersion. Seyyathidaṁ—sammādiį¹­į¹­hi …pe… sammāsamādhi. This is the noble eightfold path that should be developed to give up these five kinds of sensual stimulation.ā€ Imesaṁ kho, uttiya, paƱcannaṁ kāmaguṇānaṁ pahānāya ayaṁ ariyo aį¹­į¹­haį¹…giko maggo bhāvetabboā€ti.

Tassuddānaṁ

Micchattaṁ akusalaṁ dhammaṁ, Duve paṭipadāpi ca; Asappurisena dve kumbho, Samādhi vedanuttiyenāti.
