Vakkali Vakkalittheragāthā

“Struck by a wind ailment “Vātarogābhinīto tvaṁ, while dwelling in a forest grove, viharaṁ kānane vane; you’ve entered a tough place for gathering alms—Paviṭṭhagocare lūkhe, how will you get by, monk?” kathaṁ bhikkhu karissasi”.

“Pervading this bag of bones “Pītisukhena vipulena, with abundant rapture and happiness, pharamāno samussayaṁ; putting up with what’s tough, Lūkhampi abhisambhonto, I’ll dwell in the forest. viharissāmi kānane.

Developing mindfulness meditation, Bhāvento satipaṭṭhāne, the faculties and the powers, indriyāni balāni ca; developing the factors of awakening, Bojjhaṅgāni ca bhāvento, I’ll dwell in the forest. viharissāmi kānane.

Having seen those who are energetic, resolute, Āraddhavīriye pahitatte, always staunchly vigorous, Niccaṁ daḷhaparakkame; harmonious and united, Samagge sahite disvā, I’ll dwell in the forest. Viharissāmi kānane.

Recollecting the Buddha—Anussaranto sambuddhaṁ, the best, the tamed, the serene—aggaṁ dantaṁ samāhitaṁ; tireless all day and night Atandito rattindivaṁ, I’ll dwell in the forest.” viharissāmi kānane”ti.
