Vāseṭṭhī Vāseṭṭhītherīgāthā

Struck down with grief for my son, “Puttasokenahaṁ aṭṭā, deranged, out of my mind, khittacittā visaññinī; nude, my hair flying, Naggā pakiṇṇakesī ca, I wandered here and there. tena tena vicārihaṁ.

I lived on rubbish heaps, Vīthi saṅkārakūṭesu, in cemeteries and highways. susāne rathiyāsu ca; For three years I wandered, Acariṁ tīṇi vassāni, stricken by hunger and thirst. khuppipāsāsamappitā.

Then I saw the Holy One Athaddasāsiṁ sugataṁ, back at the city of Mithilā. nagaraṁ mithilaṁ pati; Tamer of the untamed, Adantānaṁ dametāraṁ, the Awakened One fears nothing from any quarter. sambuddhamakutobhayaṁ.

Regaining my mind, Sacittaṁ paṭiladdhāna, I paid homage and sat down. vanditvāna upāvisiṁ; Out of compassion So me dhammamadesesi, Gotama taught me the Dhamma. anukampāya gotamo.

After hearing his teaching, Tassa dhammaṁ suṇitvāna, I went forth to homelessness. pabbajiṁ anagāriyaṁ; Applying myself to the Teacher’s words, Yuñjantī satthuvacane, I realized the state of grace. sacchākāsiṁ padaṁ sivaṁ.

All sorrows are cut off, Sabbe sokā samucchinnā, given up, they end here. pahīnā etadantikā; I’ve fully understood the basis Pariññātā hi me vatthū, from which grief comes to be. yato sokāna sambhavo”ti.
