Analysis Vibhaį¹…gasutta

ā€œMendicants, I will teach you mindfulness meditation, the development of mindfulness meditation, and the practice that leads to the development of mindfulness meditation. ā€œSatipaį¹­į¹­hānaƱca vo, bhikkhave, desessāmi satipaį¹­į¹­hānabhāvanaƱca satipaį¹­į¹­hānabhāvanāgāminiƱca paį¹­ipadaṁ. And what is mindfulness meditation? KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, satipaį¹­į¹­hānaṁ? It’s when a mendicant meditates by observing an aspect of the body—keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world. Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu kāye kāyānupassÄ« viharati ātāpÄ« sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṁ; They meditate observing an aspect of feelings … vedanāsu vedanānupassÄ« viharati …pe… mind … citte cittānupassÄ« viharati …pe… principles—keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world. dhammesu dhammānupassÄ« viharati ātāpÄ« sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṁ. This is called mindfulness meditation. Idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, satipaį¹­į¹­hānaṁ.

And what is the development of mindfulness meditation? Katamā ca, bhikkhave, satipaį¹­į¹­hānabhāvanā? It’s when a mendicant meditates observing the body as liable to originate, as liable to fall, and as liable to originate and vanish—keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world. Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu samudayadhammānupassÄ« kāyasmiṁ viharati, vayadhammānupassÄ« kāyasmiṁ viharati, samudayavayadhammānupassÄ« kāyasmiṁ viharati, ātāpÄ« sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṁ. They observe feelings … SamudayadhammānupassÄ« vedanāsu viharati …pe… mind … samudayadhammānupassÄ« citte viharati …pe… principles as liable to originate, as liable to fall, and as liable to originate and fall—keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world. samudayadhammānupassÄ« dhammesu viharati, vayadhammānupassÄ« dhammesu viharati, samudayavayadhammānupassÄ« dhammesu viharati, ātāpÄ« sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṁ. This is called the development of mindfulness meditation. Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, satipaį¹­į¹­hānabhāvanā.

And what is the practice that leads to the development of mindfulness meditation? Katamā ca, bhikkhave, satipaį¹­į¹­hānabhāvanāgāminÄ« paį¹­ipadā? It is simply this noble eightfold path, that is: Ayameva ariyo aį¹­į¹­haį¹…giko maggo, seyyathidaṁ—right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right immersion. sammādiį¹­į¹­hi, sammāsaį¹…kappo, sammāvācā, sammākammanto, sammāājÄ«vo, sammāvāyāmo, sammāsati, sammāsamādhi. This is called the practice that leads to the development of mindfulness meditation.ā€ Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, satipaį¹­į¹­hānabhāvanāgāminÄ« paį¹­ipadÄā€ti.
