Wealth in Detail Vitthatadhanasutta
āMendicants, there are these seven kinds of wealth. āSattimÄni, bhikkhave, dhanÄni. What seven? KatamÄni satta? The wealth of faith, ethics, conscience, prudence, learning, generosity, and wisdom. SaddhÄdhanaį¹, sÄ«ladhanaį¹, hirÄ«dhanaį¹, ottappadhanaį¹, sutadhanaį¹, cÄgadhanaį¹, paƱƱÄdhanaį¹.
And what is the wealth of faith? KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, saddhÄdhanaį¹? Itās when a noble disciple has faith in the Realized Oneās awakening ⦠Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasÄvako saddho hoti, saddahati tathÄgatassa bodhiį¹: āitipi so bhagavÄ arahaį¹ sammÄsambuddho ā¦pe⦠buddho bhagavÄāti. This is called the wealth of faith. Idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, saddhÄdhanaį¹.
And what is the wealth of ethical conduct? KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, sÄ«ladhanaį¹? Itās when a noble disciple doesnāt kill living creatures, steal, commit sexual misconduct, use speech thatās false, divisive, harsh, or nonsensical, or consume beer, wine, and liquor intoxicants. Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasÄvako pÄį¹ÄtipÄtÄ paį¹ivirato hoti ā¦pe⦠surÄmerayamajjapamÄdaį¹į¹hÄnÄ paį¹ivirato hoti. This is called the wealth of ethical conduct. Idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, sÄ«ladhanaį¹.
And what is the wealth of conscience? KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, hirÄ«dhanaį¹? Itās when a noble disciple has a conscience. Theyāre conscientious about bad conduct by way of body, speech, and mind, and conscientious about having any bad, unskillful qualities. Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasÄvako hirÄ«mÄ hoti, hirÄ«yati kÄyaduccaritena vacÄ«duccaritena manoduccaritena, hirÄ«yati pÄpakÄnaį¹ akusalÄnaį¹ dhammÄnaį¹ samÄpattiyÄ. This is called the wealth of conscience. Idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, hirÄ«dhanaį¹.
And what is the wealth of prudence? KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, ottappadhanaį¹? Itās when a noble disciple is prudent. Theyāre prudent when it comes to bad conduct by way of body, speech, and mind, and prudent when it comes to the acquiring of any bad, unskillful qualities. Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasÄvako ottappÄ« hoti, ottappati kÄyaduccaritena vacÄ«duccaritena manoduccaritena, ottappati pÄpakÄnaį¹ akusalÄnaį¹ dhammÄnaį¹ samÄpattiyÄ. This is called the wealth of prudence. Idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, ottappadhanaį¹.
And what is the wealth of learning? KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, sutadhanaį¹? Itās when a noble disciple is very learned, remembering and keeping what theyāve learned. These teachings are good in the beginning, good in the middle, and good in the end, meaningful and well-phrased, describing a spiritual practice thatās entirely full and pure. They are very learned in such teachings, remembering them, rehearsing them, mentally scrutinizing them, and penetrating them theoretically. Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasÄvako bahussuto hoti sutadharo sutasannicayo. Ye te dhammÄ ÄdikalyÄį¹Ä majjhekalyÄį¹Ä pariyosÄnakalyÄį¹Ä sÄtthaį¹ sabyaƱjanaį¹ kevalaparipuį¹į¹aį¹ parisuddhaį¹ brahmacariyaį¹ abhivadanti. TathÄrÅ«pÄssa dhammÄ bahussutÄ honti dhÄtÄ vacasÄ paricitÄ manasÄnupekkhitÄ diį¹į¹hiyÄ suppaį¹ividdhÄ. This is called the wealth of learning. Idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, sutadhanaį¹.
And what is the wealth of generosity? KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, cÄgadhanaį¹? Itās when a noble disciple lives at home rid of the stain of stinginess, freely generous, open-handed, loving to let go, committed to charity, loving to give and to share. Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasÄvako vigatamalamaccherena cetasÄ agÄraį¹ ajjhÄvasati muttacÄgo payatapÄį¹i vosaggarato yÄcayogo dÄnasaį¹vibhÄgarato. This is called the wealth of generosity. Idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, cÄgadhanaį¹.
And what is the wealth of wisdom? KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, paƱƱÄdhanaį¹? Itās when a noble disciple is wise. They have the wisdom of arising and passing away which is noble, penetrative, and leads to the complete ending of suffering. Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasÄvako paƱƱavÄ hoti ā¦pe⦠sammÄ dukkhakkhayagÄminiyÄ. This is called the wealth of wisdom. Idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, paƱƱÄdhanaį¹.
These are the seven kinds of wealth. ImÄni kho, bhikkhave, sattadhanÄnÄ«ti.
Faith and ethical conduct are kinds of wealth, SaddhÄdhanaį¹ sÄ«ladhanaį¹, as are conscience and prudence, hirÄ« ottappiyaį¹ dhanaį¹; learning and generosity, SutadhanaƱca cÄgo ca, and wisdom is the seventh kind of wealth. paĆ±Ć±Ä ve sattamaį¹ dhanaį¹.
When a woman or man Yassa ete dhanÄ atthi, has these kinds of wealth, itthiyÄ purisassa vÄ; theyāre said to be prosperous, Adaliddoti taį¹ Ähu, their life is not in vain. amoghaį¹ tassa jÄ«vitaį¹.
So let the wise devote themselves TasmÄ saddhaƱca sÄ«laƱca, to faith, ethical behavior, pasÄdaį¹ dhammadassanaį¹; confidence, and insight into the teaching, AnuyuƱjetha medhÄvÄ«, remembering the instructions of the Buddhas.ā saraį¹ buddhÄna sÄsananāti.
