1. Pairs Yamakavagga
Cakkhupālattheravatthu
Intention shapes experiences; Manopubbaṅgamā dhammā, intention is first, they’re made by intention. manoseṭṭhā manomayā; If with corrupt intent Manasā ce paduṭṭhena, you speak or act, bhāsati vā karoti vā; suffering follows you, Tato naṁ dukkhamanveti, like a wheel, the ox’s foot. cakkaṁva vahato padaṁ.
Maṭṭhakuṇḍalīvatthu

Tissattheravatthu
“They abused me, they hit me! Akkocchi maṁ avadhi maṁ, They beat me, they robbed me!” ajini maṁ ahāsi me; For those who bear such a grudge, Ye ca taṁ upanayhanti, hatred is never laid to rest. veraṁ tesaṁ na sammati.
“They abused me, they hit me! Akkocchi maṁ avadhi maṁ, They beat me, they robbed me!” ajini maṁ ahāsi me; For those who bear no such grudge, Ye ca taṁ nupanayhanti, hatred is laid to rest. veraṁ tesūpasammati.
Kāḷayakkhinīvatthu
For never is hatred Na hi verena verāni, laid to rest by hate, sammantīdha kudācanaṁ; it’s laid to rest by love: Averena ca sammanti, this is an ancient teaching. esa dhammo sanantano.
Kosambakavatthu
When others do not understand, Pare ca na vijānanti, let us, who do understand this, mayamettha yamāmase; restrain ourselves in this regard; Ye ca tattha vijānanti, for that is how conflicts are laid to rest. tato sammanti medhagā.
Mahākāḷattheravatthu
Those who contemplate the beautiful, Subhānupassiṁ viharantaṁ, their faculties unrestrained, indriyesu asaṁvutaṁ; immoderate in eating, Bhojanamhi cāmattaññuṁ, lazy, lacking energy: kusītaṁ hīnavīriyaṁ; Māra strikes them down Taṁ ve pasahati māro, like the wind, a feeble tree. vāto rukkhaṁva dubbalaṁ.
Those who contemplate the ugly, Asubhānupassiṁ viharantaṁ, their faculties well-restrained, Indriyesu susaṁvutaṁ; eating in moderation, Bhojanamhi ca mattaññuṁ, faithful and energetic: Saddhaṁ āraddhavīriyaṁ; Māra cannot strike them down, Taṁ ve nappasahati māro, like the wind, a rocky mountain. Vāto selaṁva pabbataṁ.
Devadattavatthu
One who, not free of stains themselves, Anikkasāvo kāsāvaṁ, would wear the robe stained in ocher, yo vatthaṁ paridahissati; bereft of self-control and of truth: Apeto damasaccena, they are not worthy of the ocher robe. na so kāsāvamarahati.
One who’s purged all their stains, Yo ca vantakasāvassa, steady in ethics, sīlesu susamāhito; possessed of self-control and of truth, Upeto damasaccena, they are truly worthy of the ocher robe. sa ve kāsāvamarahati.
Sāriputtattheravatthu
Thinking the inessential is essential, Asāre sāramatino, seeing the essential as inessential; sāre cāsāradassino; they don’t realize the essential, Te sāraṁ nādhigacchanti, for wrong thoughts are their habitat. micchāsaṅkappagocarā.
Having known the essential as essential, Sārañca sārato ñatvā, and the inessential as inessential; asārañca asārato; they realize the essential, Te sāraṁ adhigacchanti, for right thoughts are their habitat. sammāsaṅkappagocarā.
Nandattheravatthu
Just as rain seeps into Yathā agāraṁ ducchannaṁ, a poorly roofed house, vuṭṭhī samativijjhati; lust seeps into Evaṁ abhāvitaṁ cittaṁ, an undeveloped mind. rāgo samativijjhati.
Just as rain doesn’t seep into Yathā agāraṁ suchannaṁ, a well roofed house, vuṭṭhī na samativijjhati; lust doesn’t seep into Evaṁ subhāvitaṁ cittaṁ, a well developed mind. rāgo na samativijjhati.
Cundasūkarikavatthu
Here they grieve, hereafter they grieve, Idha socati pecca socati, an evildoer grieves in both places. Pāpakārī ubhayattha socati; They grieve and fret, So socati so vihaññati, seeing their own corrupt deeds. Disvā kammakiliṭṭhamattano.
Dhammikaupāsakavatthu
Here they rejoice, hereafter they rejoice, Idha modati pecca modati, one who does good rejoices in both places. Katapuñño ubhayattha modati; They rejoice and celebrate, So modati so pamodati, seeing their own pure deeds. Disvā kammavisuddhimattano.
Devadattavatthu
Here they’re tormented, <j>hereafter they’re tormented, Idha tappati pecca tappati, an evildoer is tormented in both places. Pāpakārī ubhayattha tappati; They’re tormented <j>thinking of bad things they’ve done; “Pāpaṁ me katan”ti tappati, when gone to a bad place, <j>they’re tormented all the more. Bhiyyo tappati duggatiṁ gato.
Sumanadevīvatthu
Here they delight, hereafter they delight, Idha nandati pecca nandati, one who does good delights in both places. Katapuñño ubhayattha nandati; They delight thinking of good things they’ve done; “Puññaṁ me katan”ti nandati, when gone to a good place, they delight all the more. Bhiyyo nandati suggatiṁ gato.
Dvesahāyakabhikkhuvatthu
Much though they may recite scripture, Bahumpi ce saṁhita bhāsamāno, if a negligent person does not apply them, Na takkaro hoti naro pamatto; then, like a cowherd who counts the cattle of others, Gopova gāvo gaṇayaṁ paresaṁ, they miss out on the blessings of the ascetic life. Na bhāgavā sāmaññassa hoti.
Little though they may recite scripture, Appampi ce saṁhita bhāsamāno, if they live in line with the teaching, Dhammassa hoti anudhammacārī; having given up greed, hate, and delusion, Rāgañca dosañca pahāya mohaṁ, with deep understanding and heart well freed, Sammappajāno suvimuttacitto; not grasping to this life or the next, Anupādiyāno idha vā huraṁ vā, they share in the blessings of the ascetic life. Sa bhāgavā sāmaññassa hoti.
