Cast Down Yathābhatasutta

ā€œMendicants, a mendicant with five qualities is cast down to hell. ā€œPaƱcahi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu yathābhataṁ nikkhitto evaṁ niraye. What five? Katamehi paƱcahi? It’s when a mendicant is faithless, shameless, imprudent, lazy, and witless. Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu assaddho hoti, ahiriko hoti, anottappÄ« hoti, kusÄ«to hoti, duppaƱƱo hoti. A mendicant with these five qualities is cast down to hell. Imehi kho, bhikkhave, paƱcahi dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu yathābhataṁ nikkhitto evaṁ niraye.

A mendicant with five qualities is raised up to heaven. PaƱcahi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu yathābhataṁ nikkhitto evaṁ sagge. What five? Katamehi paƱcahi? It’s when a mendicant is faithful, conscientious, prudent, energetic, and wise. Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu saddho hoti, hirÄ«mā hoti, ottappÄ« hoti, āraddhavÄ«riyo hoti, paƱƱavā hoti. A mendicant with these five qualities is raised up to heaven.ā€ Imehi kho, bhikkhave, paƱcahi dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu yathābhataṁ nikkhitto evaṁ saggeā€ti.
